Johnson Lake

Overview

Johnson Lake State Recreation Area offers a classic Alaskan camping experience tucked away in the heart of the scenic Kenai Peninsula. Spread across over 300 acres, this park centers on the serene, glassy waters of Johnson Lake, providing a peaceful wooded retreat for travelers seeking a break from the main highway traffic. It remains a cherished destination for both local Alaskans and visiting RVers who appreciate a quieter, more authentic wilderness setting compared to the region's busier commercial parks. This state-run gem provides the perfect backdrop for those looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Alaska without traveling too far off the beaten path.

Location & Surroundings

Located in Kasilof, Alaska, the park is conveniently situated just a short drive off the Sterling Highway, making it highly accessible for most rigs. The surroundings are dominated by a lush Alaskan boreal forest filled with spruce and birch trees, which provide a natural canopy and excellent privacy between individual campsites. The lake serves as a picturesque centerpiece, offering calm waters and a sandy beach area that is perfect for late-night sunsets or early-morning reflections during the long summer days. Its proximity to the Kasilof River makes it a strategic basecamp for exploring the peninsula's famous waterways.

Amenities & Park Features

As a state-managed facility, the amenities focus on providing the essentials for a comfortable and rustic outdoor stay. The park features dozens of well-maintained campsites that include several key features:

  • Potable water pumps located conveniently throughout the camping loops.
  • Individual fire rings and sturdy picnic tables for outdoor cooking and gatherings.
  • A convenient RV dump station near the entrance for self-contained travelers.

While there are no on-site electrical hookups, the park provides vault toilets and a developed boat launch, ensuring that while the experience is rustic, the basic needs of the modern RVer are well-supported.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is a major highlight for visitors, as Johnson Lake is regularly stocked with rainbow trout, while the nearby Kasilof River is world-renowned for its incredible King and Silver Salmon runs. Nature lovers can spend their days birdwatching or exploring the various trails within the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. For a change of pace, a quick drive takes you to the rugged coastline of Clam Gulch for beachcombing and digging for razor clams, or into the nearby town of Soldotna to experience local Alaskan culture, shopping, and historical museums.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for nature-focused RVers who prefer a rustic, dry camping experience over luxury resort features. It is a wonderful choice for families who want a safe, quiet environment for children to play by the water and for anglers who prioritize proximity to the river. If you value seclusion and tranquility, and your rig is set up for boondocking, this Kasilof destination offers the quintessential Kenai experience for travelers of all ages.

We reserved a very nice face in spot on the lake. The sites were wooded and nicely spaced for lots of privacy.

Amazing campsite by the lake to kayak, fish or paddle board in. Nice level camp ground with a bit if privacy for each spot

After being shoehorned into so many campsites the last 5000 miles, this campground was a breath of fresh air. Our spot was spacious and graveled (no mud). Kids swam in lake. Two drawbacks were that the campground road had a lot of potholes and previous campers left trash in fire pit.

Great place for dry camping with kids. Vault toilets were super clean. Has a few beach areas with sand for kids. Great swimming and fishing.
