Jordan Lake/Poplar Point

Overview

Poplar Point at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area offers a classic North Carolina outdoor experience. Located within one of the state's most popular recreation destinations, this campground provides a balance of natural beauty and essential comforts. RVers will find a heavily wooded environment that offers plenty of shade and a sense of privacy that is often missing from private parks. As a state-run facility, it focuses on preserving the landscape while providing direct access to the expansive 14,000-acre reservoir.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Apex, NC, the park is nestled along the shoreline of Jordan Lake. The surrounding area is characterized by dense loblolly pines and diverse wildlife, making it feel miles away from urban life. However, its central location makes it highly accessible for those traveling through the Research Triangle area. The park serves as a green oasis where the sounds of the forest replace highway noise, providing a serene lakeside backdrop for any camping trip.

Amenities & Park Features

Poplar Point is well-equipped for modern RVers, offering numerous sites with electric and water hookups. While sewer hookups are not available at individual sites, the park provides multiple convenient dump stations and clean bathhouses with hot showers. Campers have access to exclusive boat ramps and designated swimming beaches within the camping loops. The sites are generally spacious and include a picnic table and fire ring, catering to those who enjoy traditional outdoor living and campfire cooking.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the water, where visitors can enjoy boating, kayaking, and world-class fishing for bass and crappie. Bird watchers frequently visit to spot bald eagles, as the lake hosts one of the largest breeding populations in the eastern United States. For those who prefer land, the nearby New Hope Overlook offers challenging hiking trails with elevated views. If you need a taste of the city, the vibrant dining and cultural scenes of Raleigh and Durham are just a short drive away.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for travelers who prioritize natural scenery and outdoor recreation over luxury resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a weekend getaway centered around the water and for nature photographers seeking wildlife encounters. Because of its large, wooded sites, it is also a favorite for those seeking a quiet retreat while remaining within reach of North Carolina's major metropolitan hubs and interstate corridors.

What an incredible campground and state park! First, an amazing deal for the RV/trailer spots with electric hookups. Second, the camping spots are nicely spaced out so have privacy and don't feel on top of your neighbors. There was many fun little spots to sit near the water or fish. I loved the trail that went between different loops of the campground and could use to get to the beach. I stayed in loop C and only had a quick walk to get to amazing views. The grounds are well maintained and the road loops around a lot for good accessibility or biking. I definitely will be returning and don't think you can go wrong with where you stay. I was farther from the water but felt secluded and more in the forest with just a short walk to the water. I will be returning next year!

one of the best parks on the east coast. Tons to do from camping, fishing, hiking to boating and RVing. Not far from APEX and nice down town areas but far enough that it feels like you are "Away from everything"

We enjoyed our stay but the bathroom was really bad. With only one bath house (4 shower stalls and 4 toilet stalls) and one restroom (3 toilet stalls) for the entire campground, both of which are on the main road, it was really inconvenient and far away from almost everyone except a few lucky spots. Not only that, they were outdated and dirty. They had push handles on both sinks and shower. And the water didn't get hot until the 17th push. Not to mention the half doors on the showers that gave you that "showering is a team sport" vibe of 1980s gym classes. Everything else about the campground is fine, we really enjoyed the campers only beach, the camping spots weren't too close together and were well maintained, and of course the lake is beautiful.

Great campground right on Jordan Lake. Several sites with lake views and lake access. Loop B sites 79,80,81 are all just amazing. Weird that the restrooms are only open on the weekend but we made due. Very wooded. Big rig friendly. Pay attention some sites don't have electricity. Great dump stations, easy to access. Saw a bald eagle just 20 feet above a camper..amazing

Huge place, but sites are all very well spaced and private. So many right on the water. Well maintained place throughout. Dump station is available with four spots. Good pressure rinse water with hose connections. Working in mid November, not sure if they get shut off for winter. Potable water fills throughout the grounds. Price is very reasonable. Military discount too. Reservations are impossible short notice, but FCFS is massive and honestly, maybe nicer sites. Very nice, helpful, and professional staff. Especially Amanda at the gate who could be the highlight of the whole place. Can’t wait to come back!
