Joshua Tree/Jumbo Rocks
Overview
Overview
Jumbo Rocks Campground offers one of the most iconic camping experiences within the boundaries of Joshua Tree National Park. Nestled deep in the heart of the Mojave Desert, this campground is world-renowned for the massive monzogranite boulders that surround and shield individual campsites. It provides a unique opportunity to sleep under some of the darkest skies in California, offering a primitive setting where the dramatic desert landscape is the primary attraction for every visitor.
Location & Surroundings
Located near Twentynine Palms, California, the campground is centrally positioned to provide easy access to the park’s most famous geological wonders. The high desert elevation creates a climate of crisp nights and sun-drenched days, with expansive views that stretch across the rugged wilderness. Travelers will find themselves completely immersed in a landscape of twisted Joshua trees and ancient rock formations that offer a true sense of desert solitude and adventure right outside their door.
Amenities & Park Features
This facility is designed specifically for a rustic, off-grid experience. There are no electrical hookups or water connections available, which means RVers must arrive with their tanks full and batteries charged. Each site is equipped with a sturdy fire ring and picnic table, and communal vault toilets are placed throughout the campground loops. While there is no dump station or potable water on-site, the natural wind protection provided by the towering boulders makes it a cozy spot for self-contained rigs.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The most famous landmark within walking distance of the campsites is Skull Rock, a geological formation that naturally resembles its namesake. Visitors can also trek the Discovery Trail, which winds through the rocks and provides educational markers about the local environment. For those who enjoy vertical adventure, the area is a haven for rock scrambling and technical climbing. When the sun sets, the remote location allows for exceptional stargazing, with the Milky Way often visible to the naked eye.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for travelers who prioritize a deep connection with nature over modern resort luxuries. It is a perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts, landscape photographers, and families looking to explore a natural rock playground. Because it offers a more primitive style of camping, it is best suited for self-sufficient RV travelers who are comfortable dry camping and want to wake up surrounded by the striking, rugged beauty of the California desert.

Stayed in campsite Number 26, which has a real big rock at the back of it which you can see in the picture that I posted that gives you great shade after 5 or 6 o'clock on. Went for the stargazing at night and was not disappointed til Mr Moon showed up. Obviously I didn't plan the trip very well besides getting the Reservation for the campsite.

I just want to say, this may have been the most romantic experience of my life. The grounds, the rocks, all under the stars. It gave me a real fresh breathe in life and I’m feeling very different about all my choices. Life just feels a little different. A couple days on this campground without my beloved wife was not fun, but my old friend and I really, really connected. 5 BIG STARS all around!!

Jumbo Rocks Campground is one of the most unique camping spots in Southern California. The massive rock formations surrounding the campsites make it feel like you’re camping on another planet. It’s perfect for stargazing, exploring, and climbing around the giant boulders. The sites are well spaced, quiet, and give you a true desert experience. Sunsets and night skies here are incredible. If you want a classic Joshua Tree camping trip with amazing scenery, this campground is hard to beat.

It was like staying in Bedrock, I expected Fred Flintstone to pop his head over the rocks at any moment. It's a truly unique campground. It can get very windy and the mice are fast if your not paying attention and leave something out... even for a few minutes. Even our 17yo dog did some exploring, something the old guy hasn't done in awhile.

Jumbo Rock Campground is one of the most iconic campgrounds in Joshua Tree National Park, surrounded by massive granite boulders that create a truly unique desert camping experience. The sites feel surprisingly private thanks to the natural rock formations, and the night sky is exceptional for stargazing. Facilities are very basic—no water, electricity, or showers—so you’ll need to come prepared. One of its biggest advantages is the location, with Skull Rock, one of the park’s most famous landmarks, just a short drive away. Price: about $30 per night per campsite. Ideal for campers who value atmosphere, scenery, and proximity to key attractions over comfort.
