Joshua Tree National Park

Disclaimer❗️my review might be biased based on my situation. I traveled alone to Joshua tree national park. I entered through cottonwood visitor center. For straight ~30 miles I couldn’t find any person or a spot. That was little scary. I thought it’s because I visited over the weekday. But there are people on the other side of the park (29 Palm Springs entrance). In addition, it was hard to find spots like arch rock and heart rock. Cholla cactus garden, skull rock was easy. I was little confused at the end of key views road. I felt very happy when I spotted people at key views. I was so scared that I messed up the route. More signs for the park would have been helpful. Overall a great experience.

Joshua Tree National Park is one of the most unique and captivating landscapes in the American Southwest—a perfect blend of rugged desert beauty, surreal rock formations, and the iconic, twisted Joshua trees that make the place feel almost otherworldly. From the moment you enter the park, the scenery pulls you in. Massive boulders and towering rock piles rise unexpectedly from the desert floor, creating a natural playground that invites climbing, scrambling, and exploring. Whether you’re tackling popular spots like Hidden Valley, Skull Rock, or Barker Dam, or wandering through quieter backcountry areas, the terrain is endlessly fun and photogenic. The Joshua trees themselves are the stars of the show. Their strange, spiky branches and silhouettes give the park its signature look—especially stunning during sunrise and sunset, when the sky glows and the desert turns golden. If you love stargazing, Joshua Tree is unbeatable. With dark, clear skies and wide open views, the night feels enormous. On a moonless night, you can see the Milky Way stretch across the sky like a ribbon. Hikers have plenty to enjoy too. Trails like Ryan Mountain, Fortynine Palms Oasis, and Hidden Valley Loop offer great views and a taste of the park’s diversity. Even the short walks can feel magical thanks to the strange rock formations and desert plants that fill the landscape. Joshua Tree has a wild, creative energy—part peaceful solitude, part adventurous spirit. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a photographer, a climber, or someone just looking to disconnect and take in a surreal desert environment, this park delivers in every way.

Beautiful national park. We had a great time. We had to wait a bit in line and there was about 25 minutes of traffic at the west entrance. We paid 30 dollars for our vehicle for seven days. You can see similar landscapes outside the national park, but this place is still on another level. The staff were very kind and gave us a map.

It has been on my list to visit Joshua tree national Park for a very long time. It was well worth it. We had perfect weather, not a cloud in the sky, and we went early in the morning, so it wasn’t too hot. I highly recommend visiting in the month of October. I had never seen trees like this in my life, and the cactus were all so cool. For wildlife, we only saw a few birds, a couple lizards, and one chipmunk. I highly recommend bringing a camera for photos and taking plenty of water with you. Wear sunscreen. It’s possible to drive through park and get out to take photos at viewing points—you do not need to commit to hiking for hours. The park map also lists the length of hikes and whether or not they are a loop or walking in/walking back, etc. very helpful. You must see Split Rock & Skull Rock.
