Overview

J.T. Cheeseman Provincial Park serves as the perfect introduction to the rugged beauty of Newfoundland. Located just minutes from the ferry terminal in Channel-Port-aux-Basques, this park offers a serene environment for travelers entering or exiting the province. The park is characterized by its beautiful sandy beach and unique forest landscape, providing a soft landing for those who have just completed the crossing from Nova Scotia. It balances convenience with natural charm effectively.

Location & Surroundings

Set against the backdrop of the Long Range Mountains, the park features a rare natural sand beach along the southwest coast of the island. The surrounding landscape includes lush forests and barachois ponds, creating a diverse ecosystem for visitors to explore. Its proximity to the Marine Atlantic ferry terminal makes it an essential stopover for RVers, yet the quiet coastal atmosphere feels worlds away from the busy port activity.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters well to RVers with a mix of serviced sites with 30-amp electricity and unserviced options for a more rustic experience. The facilities are designed to support long-distance travelers and include:

  • Modern comfort stations with hot showers and laundry facilities.
  • A central dump station and potable water fill-up points.
  • A well-maintained playground and picnic areas for family recreation.

Fire pits and picnic tables are provided at individual sites, allowing travelers to enjoy a traditional camping experience under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park boundaries, the Cape Ray Lighthouse is a must-visit historic landmark offering stunning views of the Cabot Strait. Hikers can explore sections of the T'Railway Provincial Park or local coastal trails known for excellent birdwatching opportunities and sightings of the endangered Piping Plover. The town of Port-aux-Basques is nearby for supplies, local dining, and maritime history, while the sandy shores within the park are ideal for beachcombing.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for Marine Atlantic ferry passengers looking for a convenient and scenic first or last night on the island. It is a fantastic choice for nature photographers and families who value easy beach access and a quiet, well-managed atmosphere. Always a blessing. The park is clean, and although it was closed provided good walking and a quick overnight sleep while waiting for the ferry! The beach is stupendous!! Bathrooms were still open so as a woman- thank you! And it is so peaceful! Love this campground- one of my favourites and listening to the stream - is always so relaxing!

Very nice park. Decided to come here for the night just sleeping in my van but I needed laundry and a shower can't beat the price if you don't need hookups. Beautiful beach and nice little waterfall. Washers are still free. Two different dryers one takes loonies and one takes quarters still works out to $1 for 20 minutes either way. Good washers and dryers great shape almost new. Bathrooms are very clean nice showers. The only gripe I have is you have to push a button for the showers and it only lasts 14 seconds ( Yes I timed it). So that's a bit of a pain in the butt having to push the button 20x. What more can you ask for I'm staying in the section with site number 3 unserviced. Nice and close to the ferry. And site number 3 is right where the split for the one-way goes so I don't have to go all the way around I can just come back down the way I went in. I was originally in 55 but too crowded there for me. Guy working at the front gate I think his name was Brian he was like super nice. Campsite 14 and 15 are right beside the waterfalls one on either side they are don't unserviced tho. 16 is right across from it. You can still hear the falls. It's just a small waterfall but it's really nice. I'm posting a picture of the sites. Just so people has an idea. It's marked up a little bit the orange spots are unserviced. There are other spots that are unservice but they were reserved like the ones beside the waterfalls. But it gives you an idea you can always call ahead and say you like this site number and ask if it has service or not.
