Juniper Beach Park
Overview
Juniper Beach Provincial Park offers a striking contrast to the lush forests often associated with British Columbia. Located in the rain shadow of the Coast Mountains, this park provides a desert-like atmosphere characterized by sagebrush, cactus, and golden hills. It serves as a tranquil riverside retreat for RVers traveling the Trans-Canada Highway between the Lower Mainland and the Interior. The park is renowned for its scenic river views and unique ecological setting.
Location & Surroundings
Situated on the banks of the Thompson River near Cache Creek, the park is nestled within a deep valley. The surrounding landscape is defined by its semi-arid climate and rugged terrain. Visitors often enjoy the dramatic views of the rolling hills and the constant presence of the river, which defines the park geography. Its location makes it an ideal midpoint stopover for those heading toward the Rocky Mountains from the coast.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is designed for a rustic camping experience, as it does not offer electrical or water hookups for individual sites. However, the facilities include well-maintained paved RV pads, pit toilets, and seasonal potable water stations. Most sites are spacious and offer level ground, making them accessible for various rig sizes. The riverside campsites are particularly popular, providing direct views of the water and easy access to the rocky shoreline for evening strolls.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Anglers are drawn here for the world-class steelhead and trout fishing available in the Thompson River. The area is also a favorite for photography and train enthusiasts, as both major rail lines pass through the valley, offering frequent sightings against the desert backdrop. Nearby, visitors can explore the Historic Hat Creek Ranch to learn about the region Gold Rush history or visit the nearby town of Cache Creek for local services and supplies.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who appreciate a quiet, natural setting without the need for full resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for travelers who enjoy train watching and those seeking a unique ecological landscape within British Columbia. If you prefer the sound of a rushing river and the scent of sage over a crowded commercial campground, this park will suit your travel style perfectly.

Stayed here for 2 nights and absolutely loved it! Beautiful spot right on the river. Had a great time sitting down at the river watching all the salmon make their way up the river to spawn. The trains are frequent and loud but didn't bother us at all. There is no cell phone reception , we had to walk up to the parking lot which wasn't far and not a big deal at all. Huge shout out to Betsy the park operator! She was so kind, and very funny! We will definitely be back!

We had a great first come first serve campsite right on the river with power and water. Fly fishermen were having great days on riverbank and we enjoyed watching. One fisherman kindly offered us a salmon. Fish were plentiful - mostly pink and sockeye salmon. Outhouse are clean. No showers. Dumping station available. As others have said the trains are frequent and noisy. I live by trains so am used to it but these are different - think screeching metal. We often covered our and our dog's ears -- and we are not babies about these things. Overall the great spot outweighed the downside of trains.

We had a short 2 night stay recently at site #4 on the riverbank. Pros: -The Hosts keep the park immaculate. Even flower baskets hanging from the pit toilets! -The setting is beautiful and we enjoyed a nice breeze from the river on a +33 degree day. -Our site had power which was also much appreciated. Cons: -No wifi at the site. (I know, first world problem .... Quit whining right?) It was accessible a short walk away in the upper parking lot, so we could check in with family. -TRAINS. Ok we knew that they were going to be there prior to booking. There are trains on a regular basis both across the river AND behind us. No whistle blowing which was appreciated. After the first night we got used to them though. -Guys on the site next to us parked their trailer really weird, which kinda infringed on our 'personal space'. They also smoked weed in the evening so we couldn't sit outside as the stench was awful. That sucked. That all being said, we have booked another stay in a couple of weeks, so, really it wasn't that bad. Overall we enjoyed our stay. :)

Juniper Beach is nestled between the C.P. and C.N. rail lines and beside the Thompson River. Most sites have power and water. There is also a sani dump on site. It can get hot here, but there's a nice low flow area of the river for swimming.

We loved it there, an Oasis in the beautiful desert. Well maintained lots, great knowledgeable staff. Would have received additional stars if it weren’t for the high pitched squelching from passing trains. River is beautiful to watch, incredibly peaceful!
