Kaibab/Ten X
Overview
Kaibab/Ten X Campground offers a serene, forested escape just minutes from one of the world's most iconic natural wonders. Nestled within the lush Kaibab National Forest, this campground provides a quiet alternative to the busier lodges and developed parks found directly inside the Grand Canyon. It is defined by its towering Ponderosa pine trees and exceptionally spacious sites, offering a deep sense of seclusion while remaining conveniently close to the South Rim main gates.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately four miles south of the Grand Canyon National Park entrance near Tusayan, the location is ideal for beating the crowds at the rim. The park sits at an elevation of about 6,600 feet, which keeps the summer temperatures significantly cooler than the inner canyon floor. The surroundings are quintessentially Arizonan high-country, featuring a dense canopy of trees that provide ample shade and a peaceful natural buffer from the nearby commercial hubs.
Amenities & Park Features
As a forest service managed facility, the amenities emphasize a traditional, rustic experience. There are no utility hookups available for RVs, so visitors should arrive prepared for a dry camping experience. The park features wide, paved sites that can accommodate a variety of rig sizes. Key amenities include:
- Vault toilets located conveniently throughout the loops.
- Seasonally available drinking water from central spigots.
- Individual fire rings and picnic tables at every site.
The layout is designed to provide maximum privacy between neighbors, ensuring a quiet stay under the stars.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the world-famous Grand Canyon South Rim, where travelers can access the Rim Trail, Mather Point, and numerous visitor centers. For those looking to explore the immediate vicinity, the Ten X Trail offers a gentle loop through the forest, perfect for a morning walk or spotting local bird species. Wildlife sightings are quite common here; it is not unusual to see elk and mule deer grazing peacefully near the campsites during the twilight hours.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize natural beauty and quiet over luxury resort-style amenities. It is a fantastic choice for nature photographers and outdoor enthusiasts who want a traditional camping atmosphere while exploring the national park. If you prefer the sound of wind through the pines and a dark sky perfect for stargazing over the bustle of a crowded park, Ten X is the perfect high-country match.

This is a national forestry campground. It is extremely well maintained. They have campground hosts for each loop so you do not have to track down the host if you need assistance. All of the hosts I spoke with were professional, friendly, helpful and all around amazing. Many of the sites are not very level so you have to choose wisely. The only loop open year round is loop E, which is first come, first serve.

Ten-x campground is a great place to stay. If you make reservations, it's very well maintained and it's reserved for you. There are on-site hosts to help you with your camp spot if necessary and any problems that arise. There are a couple good loops that you can choose from and it is well maintained. I would recommend this. I am a local to Arizona and I stay here during the summer yearly multiple times. It's really close to the Grand canyon with great access to all things Grand canyon. You do not need to bring wood. You can just go around and collect any wood from falling trees that are within the campsite and you can burn them in the pits. It's generally very quiet and everybody is respectful. There are group spots available but you need to reserve them in advance. If you find this review helpful, please thumbs up.

The Tusayan-Montane Campground is just South of Tusayan and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Reservations are via recreation.gov and there are first come first serve sights. We camped near the end of June and the campground had many open sites in the FCFS section. Facilities are limited, drinking water, trash dumpsters and pit toilets. However, the campground itself is clean and the sites are very spaced out. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. We stayed in a pull through site, large enough for our truck and trailer with room to spare. The sizes of the sites are accurate on recreation.gov. The camp hosts were really friendly and came through a few times a day to check the toilets and make sure things were going smoothly. Availability - excellent first come first serve and reservations. Ambience - excellent with a lot of space, nature trails and trees and wildlife. Limitations - RV water and dump station at Mather Campground inside the park. No shuttle stop for Grand Canyon. No other services.

The campsite was very clean and spacious! The host also allowed us to add an extra vehicle when he learned about our situation. He was very accommodating. Thank you!
