Kap-Kig-Iwan

Overview

Kap-Kig-Iwan Provincial Park is a hidden gem located in Northern Ontario, often referred to as the Park of Falling Waters. While it is one of the smallest parks in the provincial system, it offers a dramatic landscape defined by the rugged Englehart River. Visitors are greeted by a series of cascading waterfalls and deep ravines that provide a serene and picturesque backdrop for any RV stay. It serves as a tranquil retreat for those traveling through the Temiskaming District, providing a unique opportunity to witness the raw power of Northern Ontario waterways in an intimate setting.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just two kilometers south of the town of Englehart, ON, the park is nestled within the Great Clay Belt. The surrounding geography is a diverse mix of lush boreal forest and steep river valleys. The park's position along the Englehart River ensures that the sound of rushing water is never far away, creating an immersive wilderness experience. This location feels much more remote and wild than its convenient proximity to the Trans-Canada Highway would suggest, making it an easy but impactful detour for travelers.

Amenities & Park Features

This park offers a variety of camping options, including several electrical hookup sites suitable for mid-sized RVs and trailers. While the facilities are more rustic than a private resort, the park provides a peaceful atmosphere with the following features:

  • Level camping sites with 30-amp service available
  • Well-maintained vault toilets and conveniently located water taps
  • Scenic picnic areas and a playground for families
  • Access to diverse birdwatching habitats and geological sites

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is the extensive trail system, most notably the Hell's Gate Trail, which offers spectacular views of the river's high banks and churning rapids. RVers can spend their days exploring the various loops or searching for rare native plants. Key activities include:

  • Hiking the Upland Trail for sweeping forest views
  • Photographing the iconic Kap-Kig-Iwan Falls
  • Visiting the nearby town of Englehart for local railway history

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature photographers and birdwatchers who prioritize natural beauty and quietude over luxury amenities. It is a perfect fit for RVers looking for a quiet, rustic stopover while traveling north or south through the province. Travelers who prefer self-contained camping and appreciate the sights and sounds of a natural river valley will find this park to be a memorable and refreshing highlight of their journey through the Ontario wilds.

I absolutely love this park. I've been coming here since I was a kid, and now that it has reopened, the staff have sone such a good job cleaning up the area including trails, campsites and more. Definitely worth stopping and having a peek!

Beautiful park with good trails. Park is dated and needs some TLC. Most sites have a slope and not overly private or large but acceptable. Not a good park for kids as there is no swimming. We were able to get decent cell reception on our site.

We loved this park!! We loved discovering remnants of firepits, sun dial, and water taps. It's too bad that the suspension bridge was removed a few years ago. The trails are well-maintained along ski trails. The falls are beautiful! It is definitely worth the short drive off hwy 11. It's too bad Ontario Parks has let this park fall into some disrepair. It is beautiful!

It is one of the most beautiful provincial parks close to Highway 11, two tall spots to get panoramic pictures, camping parking lot, waterfall, low and medium demanding hiking routes. In Winter, cross country sky club. Great place to enjoy...
