Kelly Island (BLM)
Overview
Kelly Island Campground, managed by the BLM, offers a tranquil escape on the banks of the South Fork of the Snake River. This site provides a rustic camping experience surrounded by lush cottonwood forests, making it a favorite for those seeking peace away from the city. Visitors can enjoy the gentle sound of the river while staying in a well-maintained, natural environment. It is widely recognized for its scenic beauty and wildlife, offering a glimpse into the rugged charm of eastern Idaho.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 20 miles northeast of Idaho Falls, the campground sits within a unique riparian ecosystem along the river. The area is characterized by dense vegetation and towering trees that provide ample shade and privacy between sites. The surrounding landscape features rolling hills and the expansive river valley, which serves as a critical habitat for bald eagles and other raptors. This remote feel is surprisingly accessible, allowing travelers to transition from urban conveniences to complete wilderness in a short drive.
Amenities & Park Features
As a BLM managed site, the amenities here are basic but functional for self-contained RVers. The park features a concrete boat ramp, providing easy access for those looking to float or fish the Snake River. There are vault toilets and seasonal potable water available, though there are no electric or sewer hookups. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for evening gatherings under the stars. The roads and pads are gravel, accommodating various rig sizes, though larger motorhomes should exercise caution.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the world-class trout fishing on the South Fork, which attracts anglers from across the country. Beyond the water, the nearby city of Idaho Falls offers the beautiful Snake River Greenbelt and various local dining options for a day trip. Nature enthusiasts can explore the Heise Hot Springs for a soak or head further east toward the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Park. The immediate area is also excellent for photography and bird watching, particularly during the migration seasons.
Who This Park Is Best For
Kelly Island is an ideal destination for nature lovers and anglers who prioritize environment over luxury amenities. If you enjoy boondocking or have a self-contained RV, you will appreciate the solitude and the direct access to the river. It is a perfect fit for outdoor enthusiasts looking for a basecamp to explore eastern Idaho’s waterways. Families seeking a quiet, screen-free getaway will find the natural playground of the river and woods a refreshing change of pace from traditional commercial parks.

We came for overnight stop but was so impressed by the location we stayed for 3 nights … with only 10$ a night this place offers great views of river … good place for fishing and host was so warm and welcoming … water is available at every camping spot and only pit toilets
good dogs
The host was friendly and helpful. Other reviews said there was one water source. Now, there is water at each site.

The size of our group lot exceeded expectations, and although it’s out of their control I was impressed with how few bugs there were. We didn’t even have to use bug spray. Water accessibility was no issue.

Beautiful campground with a few of the 14 sites right on Snake River. The bathrooms were clean and maintained. The camp host was nice and helpful. Each site has its own water, picnic table and fire ring. I stayed for 3 nights but you are allowed up to 5. They have a group site for day use. A very clean and maintained campground.

This was a great campsite! We used the group area that had a nice pavilion with picnic tables and accessible, potable water. There were lots of trees to hook up hammocks, nearby clean outhouses, and very few mosquitoes (although that may have been due to the wind that was blowing for the majority of the evening, so do bring big spray). I look forward to camping here again.
