Kelso Beach (City Park)

Overview

Kelso Beach at Nawash Park serves as a scenic cornerstone of the Owen Sound waterfront, offering a relaxed environment where the Pottawatomi River meets the clear waters of Georgian Bay. For RV travelers, the park provides a rare opportunity to stay directly on the shores of Lake Huron’s famous bay while remaining close to the conveniences of a mid-sized city. It is a place where natural beauty and community spirit converge, making it a staple for those touring the Bruce Peninsula region.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on the western shore of Owen Sound, the park offers stunning vistas across the water toward the rugged cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment. The park grounds are characterized by spacious green lawns and mature willow trees that provide ample shade during the warm Ontario summers. Its geographic position makes it a strategic base for exploring Grey County, with the shoreline providing a peaceful backdrop that feels much further from the city center than it actually is.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is exceptionally well-equipped for families and outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy a sandy swimming beach and a modern splash pad that is a hit with younger travelers. On-site facilities include accessible washrooms, picnic shelters for large gatherings, and a well-maintained playground. For those looking to stay active, the park serves as a trailhead for the Tom Thomson Trail, which offers a scenic route for cycling or walking along the bay towards the downtown core.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park boundaries, the area is rich with natural and cultural sites. A short drive leads to the breathtaking Inglis Falls, where the Sydenham River plunges over the escarpment. History buffs can explore the Billy Bishop Museum or visit the Grey Roots Museum and Archives to learn about local heritage. Every August, the park transforms into the vibrant home of the Summerfolk Music and Crafts Festival, which attracts musicians and artisans from across North America.

This destination is ideal for family travelers who prioritize recreational variety and water access. It appeals to those who want the classic experience of a lakeside vacation without sacrificing proximity to grocery stores and local dining. Small but it's nice. There's parking area and washroom on site. Beach on site is shallow, and there's Splash pad with playground, good for younger kids.

Kelso Beach Park is surprisingly clean and the water quality looks good. I like that it’s not too crowded here. The beach part is somewhat small but looks great. There is a playground there for kids and a splash pad. The washrooms are okay, at least there are no line ups.

During my recent visit, I discovered a hidden gem of a park nestled alongside a stunning beach. The park's pristine surroundings and well-maintained facilities left a lasting impression. The washrooms were clean and well-equipped, providing a sense of comfort and convenience. It's always a relief to find such well-maintained amenities in a public park. The highlight of this park was undoubtedly its location by the seaside. The beach was immaculate, offering a serene and picturesque setting. I enjoyed taking a leisurely stroll along the shoreline. Moreover, the presence of a water playground specifically designed for kids added a delightful touch. Families with children can enjoy a fun-filled day by the water, making it an ideal spot for a family outing.

Nice park to hang out and enjoy the weather or go for a swim. Nice little amphitheatre where you could listen to live bands. There is a splash area and lovely green spaces to pop down with a picnic blanket and relax for the day.
