Kenai National Wildlife Refuge/Upper Skilak Lake

RV Park

Overview

Overview

Upper Skilak Lake Campground, located within the vast Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, offers a quintessential Alaskan wilderness experience. This is not a modern RV resort with full utilities, but rather a rustic, serene escape that puts travelers directly into the heart of the backcountry. Ideal for those who value solitude and raw natural beauty, the campground provides a tranquil base for exploring the rugged terrain of the Kenai Peninsula in a truly immersive, off-grid environment.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near Cooper Landing, Alaska, the campground rests along the shores of the expansive Skilak Lake. The surrounding landscape is defined by glacier-fed waters, dense spruce forests, and the towering, snow-capped peaks of the Kenai Mountains. Access is provided via the scenic Skilak Lake Road, a route that winds through breathtaking wilderness. Its remote location offers a secluded atmosphere, far from the noise of highway traffic, making it a perfect retreat for nature lovers.

Amenities & Park Features

As a primitive campground, Upper Skilak Lake focuses on essential comfort rather than full-service luxury. The sites are designed to accommodate smaller RVs and travel trailers, offering spacious, gravel pads that blend naturally into the forest floor. Visitors have access to vault toilets and well-maintained fire rings for evening gatherings. Because there are no hookups available, travelers should arrive with self-contained units and a full supply of fresh water to ensure a comfortable stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The area surrounding the campground is a paradise for outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Guests can easily access the nearby boat launch for fishing or kayaking on Skilak Lake, known for its incredible trout and salmon runs. Hiking trails, including the popular Skilak Lookout Trail, provide hikers with elevated views of the refuge. Wildlife enthusiasts often spot moose, brown bears, and bald eagles in their natural habitat, offering exceptional opportunities for nature photography and peaceful morning walks along the lakeshore.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is best suited for self-sufficient RVers who prefer wilderness camping over structured resorts. If you enjoy boondocking and want to disconnect from technology to reconnect with the Alaskan landscape, this location is an ideal choice. It is perfectly suited for those with smaller rigs or travel trailers who seek a peaceful, quiet environment where the primary entertainment is provided by the surrounding forest and the calming waters of the lake.

Very quiet, clean. Beautiful lake with nice scenery. The dirt road in was about 8.5 miles and has some rough spots. Saw black and brown (grizzly) bears. The campsite had a good fire pit. Keep an eye on the weather forecast (I use Windy App). Wind can kick up on this lake. I would stay here again.

Fun little campground with a nice boat launch. Beach is mainly 3” +\- rocks and the outhouses are some of the best retro I’ve seen in South Central AK. About 10 tent sites along the beach that are very easy to walk to on a well maintained/Paved path

I was at the lake several times over the last summer. I love this place. Storms can come up suddenly so make sure you don’t get caught on the lake if it starts to get bad. Absolutely stunning beauty.

12 to 15 RV sites, 12 walk in tent sites. Two pit toilets side by side in the RV camp area. Two pit toilets in parking lot of walk in tent sites.
