Kern River (Kern County Park)
Overview
Kern River County Park provides a peaceful escape just a short drive from the urban center of Bakersfield. This county-managed campground is designed for those who appreciate natural beauty and outdoor recreation without the flashiness of a high-end resort. It serves as a gateway to the southern Sierra Nevada foothills, offering a relaxed environment where the sound of the wind through the trees sets the pace for your stay. The park is a favorite for local residents and traveling RVers alike who seek a connection to the California landscape.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the rolling hills of northeast Bakersfield, the park is bordered by the Kern River and is adjacent to the popular Lake Ming. The landscape is characterized by desert flora and golden hills, providing a distinct contrast to the agricultural valley floor nearby. Its position near the Alfred Harrell Highway makes it easily accessible for big rigs while remaining far enough from the city to enjoy clear night skies and a quiet atmosphere away from industrial noise.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features sites equipped with electric and water hookups, though travelers should note the lack of sewer connections at individual pedestals. A centralized dump station is provided on-site for convenience. Visitors have access to basic restrooms and shower facilities, and each site includes a picnic table and fire ring for evening campfires. The paved parking pads are relatively level, accommodating a variety of RV sizes ranging from small travel trailers to larger motorhomes.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do within minutes of their campsite. You can spend a day fishing or boating at Lake Ming or explore the nearby California Living Museum (CALM) to see local wildlife and botanical gardens. For those who enjoy a round of golf, the Kern River Golf Course is located right next door. Additionally, Hart Park offers sprawling green spaces, paved walking paths, and a chance to see the resident peacocks and wandering wildlife that call the area home.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize scenery and proximity to water activities over luxury resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for an affordable weekend getaway or travelers seeking a quiet stopover on their way to the Sierra National Forest. If you enjoy birdwatching and hiking, the natural surroundings of this Kern County gem will provide the quiet retreat you are looking for while staying close to city conveniences.

It's close and easy to get to. The camp ground is very nice with alot of trees and the sound of the river, (especially at night when going to sleep), is very peaceful. They have brand new bathrooms and showers . Loved this place will definitely be back!!!

We had a great time here, great environment, next to the river, and great site. The host was nice as well. The only reason I give it a 4 stars is because the bathrooms were dirty, and people would plug up the toilets but there's signs saying that the restrooms are going to be reconstructed so maybe it'll be better later down the road.

Overall good, but the showers and really the whole bathroom was Disgusting… Sure they’re old, but no excuse for them being crusty & SO unclean.🤢(luckily included/no quarters; shifts from lukewarm to cool; no bench & only 1 hook for clothes+). Rob the host was great & friendly👍
