Kerr Lake/County Line

Overview

County Line Recreation Area offers a serene escape on the shores of the massive John H. Kerr Reservoir near the Virginia border. As part of the North Carolina State Parks system, this destination provides a classic camping experience where the focus remains on the natural beauty of the Piedmont region. Visitors are greeted by rolling hills and dense forests that frame the 50,000-acre lake. It is an ideal spot for those who want to disconnect from the hustle of city life and reconnect with the outdoors in a tranquil lakeside setting.

Location & Surroundings

Located just north of Henderson, NC, the park sits on a scenic peninsula that extends deep into the water. The surrounding landscape is characterized by mature hardwood forests and quiet coves, providing a sense of seclusion despite being easily accessible from I-85. The elevation changes slightly throughout the park, offering many campsites a clear view of the reservoir. Because it is situated away from major commercial hubs, the area remains exceptionally quiet, especially during the stunning sunset hours over the lake.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for RV travelers, featuring over 60 campsites that offer electric and water hookups. While the sites maintain a rustic feel, the presence of clean bathhouses with hot showers and a convenient dump station ensures a comfortable stay. Water enthusiasts will appreciate the multi-lane boat ramp and a dedicated swimming beach located within the facility. The sites are generally spacious, many offering enough room for larger rigs, though the natural terrain makes each pad unique in its layout and shade coverage.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Life here revolves around the water, making it a premier destination for world-class bass fishing and powerboating. Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can explore other sections of the Kerr Lake State Recreation Area, such as Satterwhite Point, which features a full-service marina and additional hiking trails. History buffs might enjoy a short drive into Henderson to see the historic downtown district, while nature photographers will find plenty of opportunities to spot bald eagles and osprey along the shoreline.

Who This Park Is Best For

County Line is best suited for nature-focused RVers who prefer the quiet rhythm of a state park over the busy amenities of a luxury resort. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a safe place to swim and bike, as well as anglers who want direct access to the reservoir. If you value privacy, wooded surroundings, and the sound of water lapping against the shore, this park will perfectly fit your travel style.

We had a great campsite. The park was peaceful. Got a lot of walking in. Bathrooms need a bit more attention but overall they are nicer than most. Very disappointed that there are no trash cans, anywhere in the park. The woman at the entrance did not know why. We saw a park worker often but we were unable to catch up to him. The host stated that they collected the trash cans during Covid and never put them back out. They want us to dispose of trash at the main entrance. This is unacceptable. While walking I would see an occasional drink can, food wrapper, and misc piece of trash. Cans only need to be addressed twice a day. I saw the park worker at least that much. Funding has nothing to do with it. If he has time to ride around in his truck he has time to change out a bag. Come on park system, take care of those that pay the bills

The person at the entrance acted like they couldn’t be bothered. Thankfully we didn’t need to interact with them any more than getting our parking pass. That being said, the lake is beautiful! We were unlucky with a slanted lot. But it didn’t take away from our stay

Large, private sites with lake access, reasonably priced. Gorgeous sunrise or sunset views, blue heron and eagle sightings. Basic restrooms without showers are nearby with a much nicer bathhouse in biking or driving distance.
