Kerr Lake/Hibernia

Overview

Hibernia is a standout section of the Kerr Lake State Recreation Area, offering a tranquil escape on the shores of one of the largest reservoirs in the Southeast. This state-managed facility provides a rugged, natural setting that prioritizes the beauty of North Carolina’s landscape. Visitors can expect a traditional camping experience where the focus remains on the expansive water views and the quiet of the surrounding forest. It is a well-maintained destination that captures the essence of lakeside living without the bustle of high-density private resorts.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just north of Henderson, NC, the park sits along the massive 50,000-acre John H. Kerr Reservoir. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills and dense hardwood forests that provide ample shade for many of the campsites. The proximity to the Virginia border gives the area a unique regional feel, where the water is the primary focal point. While the setting feels secluded and immersive, the park remains easily accessible from major routes, making it a convenient stop for travelers moving through the North Carolina Piedmont.

Amenities & Park Features

The Hibernia area is equipped with over 150 campsites, many featuring electric hookups suitable for modern RVs. The park provides the essential infrastructure for a successful outdoor stay, including:

  • Clean bathhouses with hot showers and restrooms
  • A central dump station and potable water access
  • Dedicated boat launching ramps and swimming areas

These facilities are designed to support a rustic yet comfortable experience, allowing travelers to focus on the natural environment rather than complex logistics.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outside the park boundaries, the city of Henderson offers local charm and essential services for restocking supplies. History buffs can explore nearby historic downtown Henderson or visit the many other access points of the Kerr Lake State Recreation Area, such as Satterwhite Point. The lake itself is a premier destination for striped bass fishing and watersports. For those who prefer land-based activities, several hiking and nature trails meander through the park, offering birdwatching opportunities and scenic overlooks of the reservoir’s vast shoreline.

Who This Park Is Best For

Hibernia is ideal for RVers who value peace and quiet over organized activities and commercial social clubs. It is a perfect fit for families looking for a classic summer camping trip or anglers seeking easy access to world-class fishing waters. Because of its spacious, wooded sites, it appeals to travelers who prefer a sense of privacy and a direct connection to nature. If your travel style involves campfire cooking and morning coffee by the water, this park will meet your needs perfectly.

Kerr Lake is one of my first go-tos for a nice ride in the afternoon with my Harley. This park is unbelievably nice. If you haven't been there, it's definitely worth a visit! I've never camped there, but the camping areas look nice also.

Great camping location as always. I have camped here multiple times. Always a great experience.

This is literally the worst Campground I've ever seen. Half of the sites aren't even close to flat, with absolutely nothing done to make them better. We will be sleeping at an angle tonight because they don't take care of anything here. This can NOT be a stste park because the state would never have let it get this way. We can't even put anything on our table because it just slides off. There is no gravel at any of the tent camping sites and only the RV sites get bear poles apparently. Also there is only one bath house and you have to walk half a mile to get to it. Overall this place is a huge disappointment, we we're really looking forward to a nice Labor day weekend but because of this place it will be more laborer than weekend.

Great location for a group outdoor camping event. Has 70% waterfront sites, water hookups, picnic tables, very scenic and secluded. A great spot to boat or kayak from. Accommodates a group of 50 people, with tents, RVs( self-contained), and campervans.
