Kilchis River County Campground (Tillamook County Park)

Overview

Kilchis River County Campground offers a serene retreat nestled within the lush landscapes of the Tillamook Valley. Managed by the Tillamook County Parks Department, this destination provides a tranquil riverside experience that contrasts with the busier coastal sites. Surrounded by towering trees and the rhythmic sounds of the water, it serves as a quintessential Pacific Northwest escape. The park is highly regarded for its immaculate natural setting, offering a sense of seclusion while remaining remarkably close to the region's most iconic landmarks.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately five miles northeast of Tillamook, Oregon, the park is located in the heart of the Kilchis River Valley. The drive to the campground winds through scenic dairy country and agricultural lands before entering a dense, temperate forest. This unique location allows guests to experience the rugged inland wilderness while staying only a short drive from the Pacific Ocean and the Tillamook Bay. It is a hidden gem that provides a quiet sanctuary away from the wind and salt spray of the immediate coastline.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is well-equipped for various camping styles, featuring several sites with electrical and water hookups alongside more primitive, dry camping options. Each site includes a paved or gravel pad, a picnic table, and a sturdy fire ring for evening gatherings. Visitors have access to clean restrooms and coin-operated showers, ensuring a comfortable stay even in the deep woods. For recreation, the park offers a well-maintained playground and a public boat launch, which serves as a primary hub for river access.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Anglers flock to this park for its exceptional fishing opportunities, particularly during the fall Chinook salmon and winter steelhead runs. The river is also a popular spot for kayaking and swimming during the warmer summer months. Beyond the park boundaries, the famous Tillamook Creamery is just a short drive away, offering tours and local treats. Hikers and explorers can quickly reach the Bayocean Peninsula or the Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint to witness some of the most dramatic coastal cliffs in Oregon.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for travelers who prioritize a rustic, nature-focused atmosphere over high-end resort amenities. It is a favorite for fishing enthusiasts, bird watchers, and families looking for a peaceful wooded environment where children can play safely. Because the park can accommodate larger RV units while maintaining a primitive feel, it is perfect for those who want a true forest experience without sacrificing the comforts of their own rig.

This campground has gorgeous river and trail access. There are clean, cozy camp sites; mine was quite spacious and the ground was perfectly pleasantly flat for a tent. Although some sites were tighter together, they were ideal for camping with friends. There are well maintained toilet and shower facilities and a nice large playground area with assorted family friendly games and activities that are available to pick up and play. I will definitely plan future camping trips here and would absolutely recommend anyone check it out.

A small, cozy campground with very little privacy. It's a beautiful area with lots of lovely sights to see. Picnic tables, a fantastic playground, and even a few games of horseshoes are in the open main area.

Amazing experience for the whole family. I cannot describe how this gem campground is great. Beautiful surroundings with the sounds of birds in early morning. The river is just few steps away from the sites. Restrooms are well maintained and clean. The host is super friendly and helpful. Trails are amazingly beautiful. I think it will be our annual destination for camping .

Beautiful campsite. River is great for swimming. Spacious playfield, playground, sand pit, horseshoe pits, basketball hoop—great for kids.

This place is amazing and it’s because of Linda, the camp host. She makes sure everyone is having fun, being respectful, to your neighbors. The campground is clean, bathrooms are always clean, firewood sold nearby or at the campground. The spots are super close to each other unless you get a group site. The best part is the River! It’s beautiful♥️♥️♥️ it is near and dear to my heart.
