Killarney/George Lake

Overview

Killarney Provincial Park, centered around the George Lake Campground, is widely regarded as the crown jewel of Ontario’s provincial park system. Known for inspiring the legendary Group of Seven painters, this wilderness destination offers a stunning contrast of white quartzite mountains and crystal-clear sapphire waters. While much of the park is designated as backcountry wilderness, the George Lake area provides a well-organized and accessible base for RVers to experience the rugged beauty of the Canadian Shield without sacrificing essential comforts.

Location & Surroundings

Situated at the end of Highway 637 on the northern shore of Georgian Bay, the park is nestled deep within the ancient La Cloche Mountains. The surrounding landscape is characterized by unique geological formations, pink granite shorelines, and dense pine forests. RVers will find themselves immersed in a secluded environment where the park’s dark sky preserve status ensures incredible stargazing opportunities, offering a quiet atmosphere far removed from the light pollution of Ontario’s busier southern corridors.

Amenities & Park Features

The George Lake Campground provides several loops with electrical hookups that accommodate a variety of RV sizes, though drivers should navigate the forested interior roads with care. Facilities include modern comfort stations equipped with flush toilets and hot showers, as well as a convenient laundromat for those on longer cross-country journeys. The park also offers a sandy swimming beach on George Lake, canoe and kayak rentals for exploring the interior waters, and a well-stocked park store for firewood and essential supplies.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Hiking is the primary activity here, with the challenging climb to The Crack providing panoramic views of the shimmering inland lakes and white ridges. For a more relaxed excursion, the historic village of Killarney is just a short drive away, offering world-famous fish and chips at the local docks along the channel. Nature lovers can also explore the Chikanishing Trail to see the iconic windswept pines or launch a boat to navigate the stunning coastline of Georgian Bay.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is perfect for active travelers and photographers who want to immerse themselves in one of Canada’s most iconic and painted landscapes. It is best suited for those who appreciate a rustic, nature-focused vibe rather than a commercial resort experience. Families and solo adventurers seeking silence, pristine water, and challenging hiking trails will find George Lake to be the ultimate northern Ontario retreat for their RV travels.

If you haven't been - go!!!! The fall was hands down the prettiest of all the places we've travelled to in Ontario. Also, for a fully packed park, we could barely hear a peep from any of other campers.

Beautiful park! George lake is stunning! We rented our canoe through Killarney Outfitters. It sucked to have to leave the park to rent it and then come back in. But the canoes were super light and sturdy! The signs to find things around the park are super confusing, especially at night when you need to use the bathroom, the one close to your site is pad locked and you have to drive around to find one. That was not so fun! They only have 1 comfort station for a lot of sites. For a good way to improve the park I'd add another comfort station and fix up the signs. There needs to be a sign to show where sites 1-6 are because we drove in circles to find it. I'd also make some electric campsites for people with trailers that would like to stay longer then a couple nights. Otherwise, we really enjoyed our short stay here. Lots to do and enjoy! Sites are large and semi private. Site 6

Beautiful stunning park with serene lakes and unique rocky lake formations. Hot showers, very clean. HOWEVER, please be prepared for A LOT of mosquitoes if coming in June/July. Every single person in our group got 15+ large swelling mosquito bites, and even bug spray DID NOT help. Otherwise when there’s fewer bugs, this is a definite 5 star.

A fantastic winter park! We hiked the crack, as well as took a couple of of the cross country ski trails and had a wonderful day! The crack was not concerning to hike during the winter, there were no real concerns of slipping, and the cool weather still had a sweating by the time we got to the top! The cross country ski trails were excellent for beginners, as this was my first time cross country skiing. I felt totally comfortable and safe!

This was our first time hiking in Killarney Provincial Park. We hiked the Crack trail and Granite Ridge. Unfortunately, it rained for most of our hike on the Crack trail, but it was still awesome. It was rugged/rocky and very slippery because of the rain. The most challenging part of the trail was climbing up the rocks to get to the top and then climbing back down. Please be very careful. Otherwise, it still made for an exhilarating hike. The next day, we took on Granite Ridge. One of the more easier hikes. We completed the trail in less than an hour. Depends on how quickly you walk. Beautiful again, lovely scenery. The trail markers on this trail got a bit confusing after we got to the top. The trail is a loop, so you can follow the first trail marker you see coming back down. It'll lead you to number 11. We are looking forward to completing the rest of the trails. P.S. If you're looking for a place to stay close to Killarney, I recommend Sudbury and then driving up to Killarney as it is more affordable and only an hour and a bit away.
