Kinbrook Island
Overview
Kinbrook Island Provincial Park provides a lush, green oasis within Alberta's vast prairie landscape. Situated on the eastern shores of Lake Newell, one of the largest and warmest man-made lakes in the province, it offers an island-like escape for travelers. The park is well-known for its vibrant ecosystem and serves as a peaceful sanctuary for both wildlife and visitors. RVers will appreciate the mature tree canopy that provides shade and privacy throughout the various camping loops.
Location & Surroundings
The park is conveniently located just 13 kilometers south of Brooks, Alberta, making it an easy stop for those traveling along the Trans-Canada Highway. Surrounded by the flat, golden grasslands of the Palliser's Triangle, the park itself is a stark contrast of blue water and green foliage. The massive Lake Newell reservoir creates a unique microclimate that is often warmer than the surrounding plains, making it a premier destination for southern Alberta sun-seekers.
Amenities & Park Features
Facilities at this provincial park are designed to accommodate a range of camping styles. There are over 160 sites, with a significant number offering power hookups to keep your RV comfortable. Essential services include a reliable sani-dump station, water filling stations, and clean washroom facilities with showers. For recreation, visitors can enjoy the expansive sandy beach area, a dedicated boat launch, and several well-placed playgrounds that make it a favorite for families traveling with children.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The lake is the primary draw, offering exceptional conditions for sailing, motorized boating, and fishing for pike or walleye. Nature lovers can explore the wetland interpretive trails, which are ideal for spotting some of the 250 bird species recorded in the area. Beyond the park, the historic Brooks Aqueduct is a nearby marvel of engineering, and the famous Dinosaur Provincial Park is less than an hour away, offering world-class fossil beds and hoodoo formations.
Who This Park Is Best For
Kinbrook Island is a perfect fit for families looking for a classic beach holiday and RVers who prioritize watersports and fishing. It is also a top-tier destination for birdwatchers and photographers who want to capture the beauty of the prairie wetlands. If you are looking for a serene lakeside environment with well-maintained facilities rather than a high-density commercial park, this provincial gem is an excellent choice for your next Alberta road trip.

A first visit to this spectacular park..Oct 4-6 2024. Camped for two nights and spent the days walking trails and taking photos. My only minor complaint is the condition of the coin operated showers. They definitely need to be upgraded

Wonderful break from driving, beautiful marsh/prairie walk. Saw numerous birds and thousands of grasshoppers. So many different kinds! Good facilities and lots of parking.

A better Alberta Provincial Park. Many amenities to comfort most campers. Walk or bike the pathways around the marsh area, have a beach day, or go boating or fishing. There's lots to do. They have showers, many washrooms and pit toilets, and do a good job with maintenance.

Beautiful campground, the sites are huge and all have 30 amp power. No water hookups though so make sure you fill your tank coming in. Awesome trails through the marshland areas.

First time here at the end of the summer and we were impressed, with what the campground had to offer. We had a site with the older well established grounds/trees so great shade and privacy. Lots of trails and paths to adventure on for families. Beautiful views around on the island and a few spots to go swimming. Water is quite warm too. Only thing to know, is that it can get tremendously windy at times so prepare for the right attire to wear. Outside of how windy it was, everything else was well enjoyed and clean grounds. And if you need anything, there's a Walmart/grocery stores in Brooks, which is about 15 mins drive away.
