Kings Canyon/Crystal Springs

Overview

Crystal Springs Campground offers a serene escape within the Grant Grove area of Kings Canyon National Park. Situated at an elevation of 6,500 feet, this facility provides a classic mountain camping experience surrounded by a dense canopy of evergreens. Unlike commercial resorts, it prioritizes a deep connection with nature, allowing visitors to wake up to the scent of cedar and pine. It serves as an ideal base for exploring the majestic giant sequoias that define this iconic California landscape.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is nestled in a mixed conifer forest just a short distance from the Grant Grove Village. Its location is strategically placed near the park’s entrance, making it accessible while still feeling secluded. Guests are surrounded by towering sugar pines and firs, with the famous General Grant Tree located just a mile away. The air here remains crisp and cool even in mid-summer, offering a refreshing reprieve from the heat of the San Joaquin Valley below.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional national park site, Crystal Springs features dry camping facilities without electric or water hookups. While the amenities are rustic, the park provides well-maintained infrastructure to ensure a comfortable stay. Key features include:

  • Mandatory bear-resistant food lockers at every site for safety.
  • Accessible flush toilets and shared potable water stations.
  • Individual fire rings and picnic tables for outdoor dining.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is the Grant Grove Trail, which leads to the second-largest tree in the world and the historic Gamlin Cabin. For those looking for water activities, Hume Lake is a scenic drive away and offers fishing and kayaking opportunities. More adventurous travelers can head further into the park to witness the sheer granite walls of the Kings Canyon gorge or explore the North Grove Loop for a quieter hiking experience through ancient sequoia groves.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is perfect for self-contained RV travelers with smaller rigs who appreciate a quiet, dark-sky environment. It is best suited for those who prioritize scenic beauty and hiking over modern luxuries like Wi-Fi or swimming pools. Families and solo explorers who want to experience the raw, untamed wilderness of the Sierra Nevada will find Crystal Springs to be a peaceful and rewarding retreat from the digital world.

We had our family reunion at the campground again and always enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. The kids love to wave at the trains passing by, and the engineers usually respond with a pull on the horn. The river is great for splashing and wading. Great place !!!

Such a lovely place, the grass is lush, swimming hole is fun. Wish it had a comfort station with showers though.

This was a great campground! It's on the calmer side of the park so the only traffic through there are other campers. The bathrooms are great and have sinks and actual flush toilets, plus a dishwashing sink. There were lots of water spigots throughout the campground. I wish some of the sites were a bit more spaced out and farther from the road. Quite a few campers got there after 11 pm on Friday night and were pretty disruptive

We are traveling the country from east to west coast staying in 16 National Parks and several other campinggrounds. Positive is that it is a great location. Unfortunately this was by far the least cleanest campground (Lot 17 and the toilets next to). For 32$ I exspect a cleaner place.
