Kings Creek Campground
Overview
Kings Creek Campground offers a quintessential high-altitude camping experience located within the Dixie National Forest. Positioned near the iconic red rock spires of Southern Utah, this site is managed by the USDA Forest Service. It serves as a peaceful retreat for those who prefer the rugged charm of a national forest setting over the commercial atmosphere of traditional RV resorts. The atmosphere is quiet, rustic, and deeply connected to the natural landscape of the Colorado Plateau.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just outside the entrance to Bryce Canyon National Park, the campground is nestled at an elevation of approximately 8,000 feet. This placement provides a breathtaking forest environment characterized by towering ponderosa pines and expansive mountain meadows. Because it sits along the scenic Byway 12 corridor, guests are treated to stunning views of the surrounding geological formations, making it a convenient home base for explorers who want to stay close to the park entrance while enjoying a quieter atmosphere.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground focuses on providing an authentic outdoor experience rather than high-end resort perks. Facilities include vault toilets and basic picnic tables located at each campsite to support a simple stay. While individual sites are available for tents and smaller RVs, visitors should note that this is a primitive-style campground. There are no water or electrical hookups provided at the sites, requiring guests to be fully self-contained for the duration of their visit to the forest.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw of this location is the immediate proximity to Bryce Canyon National Park. Enthusiasts can easily access the park to hike the famous Navajo Loop or sunrise points that showcase the hoodoos. Beyond the park, the nearby Tropic Reservoir offers opportunities for fishing and boating. Nature lovers will appreciate the extensive network of trails surrounding the campground, which are perfect for mountain biking or leisurely walks through the fragrant, high-altitude evergreen forest.
Who This Park Is Best For
Kings Creek Campground is an ideal choice for travelers who prioritize proximity to nature and tranquility over luxury resort amenities. It is best suited for boondockers and tent campers who are well-equipped to handle primitive living conditions. Those seeking a dark-sky experience will find the stargazing here exceptional. If you are looking to escape the crowds of the main park campgrounds and prefer a scenic, authentic wilderness experience, this location is a perfect fit.

Great for a seasoned car camper, tent or smaller pull behind camper trailer. Do not drive a bus length RV in to this campground. Campsites are level, fire rings are clean. Wells have water and are not just by the host site. Picnic tables are at most sites too. Host had firewood for sale. Good idea for bear country. Forgot to bring my bear bag to hang my food high enough from the tree. Also forgot my bear proof food container. Neighbors were quiet and you are close to tropic reservoir for fishing and far enough away from the park to not here the road traffic. Pine forest ambiance. Would be a 40 minute commute each way if you are working in or near Bryce.

Drove out from Vegas on 4th of July to escape the fireworks with my pup. Totally tossed a dart on the map in hopes of finding a campsite and boom! Plenty of spots available. It was $10.50 with the America the Beautiful National Parks pass. $20.50 without. Clean restrooms and close to the reservoir. Pleasant evening!

Wasn’t crazy full, and it wasn’t too far from Bryce Canyon either. If you’re coming here, prepare for the absolutely atrocious dirt road on the way in. If you don’t have a Jeep or a 4 wheel drive vehicle, it’ll be tough. There’s no soap in the bathroom, and there were no garbage bins (that we saw.) The campground itself was a very nice area with plenty of wildlife around. The campsite we used featured a grill, table, and fire pit, which all proved very useful. The gravel ground we set our tent up on was a bit rough, and even with mats it took a bit to get used to. Overall, this campground got the job done, and it’s a good second choice to the campgrounds directly in Bryce Canyon national park.

Beautiful campground by the reservoir, a little isolated from busy Bryce canyon area.
