Klamath/Indian Scotty

Overview

Indian Scotty Campground is a hidden gem tucked within the Klamath National Forest. Located along the banks of the Scott River, this destination offers a peaceful retreat for travelers looking to disconnect from the modern world. Unlike commercial resorts, it provides a scenic riverside experience surrounded by towering trees and the gentle sounds of flowing water. It serves as an excellent base for exploring the rugged beauty of Northern California, where the air is crisp and the pace of life slows down significantly for a truly relaxing stay.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near the charming town of Fort Jones, the park is nestled deep within the Scott River Canyon. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the Marble Mountain Wilderness, characterized by steep peaks and dense coniferous forests. Visitors can enjoy the immediate access to the clear waters of the Scott River, which defines the northern boundary of the campground. The dense canopy of Douglas firs and Ponderosa pines offers ample shade, keeping the temperatures comfortable even during the peak of summer months.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional forest service facility, meaning the focus is on nature rather than luxury. The park features paved interior roads and level sites that can accommodate various rig sizes, though there are no hookups available. Essential amenities include:

  • Access to potable water via hand pumps
  • Standard vault toilet facilities
  • Designated sites with picnic tables and fire rings

While there are no electrical connections, the spacious sites allow for privacy and a sense of immersion in the wilderness that larger commercial parks often lack.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do, from fishing for steelhead and trout in the river to exploring the nearby trailheads. The campground is a popular starting point for those heading into the Marble Mountain Wilderness for day hikes. For a bit of local flavor, the historic town of Fort Jones is a short drive away, offering small-town charm and local history. For those willing to travel further, segments of the Pacific Crest Trail cross through the region, offering world-class hiking opportunities for various skill levels.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who appreciate a quiet, rustic atmosphere over modern amenities. It is a perfect fit for nature photographers, anglers, and families who enjoy traditional camping activities like swimming and roasting marshmallows. It caters to travelers who prefer the crackle of a real campfire over Wi-Fi signals. If you are looking to escape the crowds and enjoy the solitude of the forest, Indian Scotty provides a serene environment that is hard to match in busier parts of the state.

We were in site 7 which was spacious, close to clean bathrooms that had space for 2 tents and a fire ring and picnic table for cooking and relaxing. 10 bucks per night is fair. No access to the creek below for that site but there are a lot of other sites. Full disclosure, coming from a skeptical person I am still having difficulty with what happened. 2:30 AM, I woke up to a deer finishing our cheez it's than 10 minutes later my girlfriend told me there was a big black dog next to the bathroom barking at her, no collar, disformed somehow, filled soon after by a bright strobe light above our tent with a terrible noise like from an animal but like nothing we heard before. By the time I got back up, pissed and confused the light was gone and the noise was at the next campground up and getting fainter. I walked 100 feet towards the bathroom and the deer was lying close by looking afraid but not of me. With flip flops and a pocket knife I decided to go back to bed. My girlfriend moved her son into our tent and we went to sleep. I will go back, there was only one other person at the entire campground and now I am thinking he was a paranormal chaser. Now that I have had time to reflect it's creeping me out and I will find out somehow what happened I will leave a review to close this out when I'm done.

It's so beautiful there and it's a good place to stay at for camping or just hanging out there for the weekend

Indian Scotty is always beautiful. The river is just right to play in and the temp not yet too hot. Great place to camp, or just a day trip.
