Kooser

Overview

Kooser State Park offers a quiet, intimate escape in the heart of the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania. Originally established in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, this 250-acre park is celebrated for its historic stone architecture and tranquil atmosphere. It serves as a peaceful retreat for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the natural beauty of the mountains, offering a slower pace of life that highlights the region's rich forestry and seasonal changes.

Location & Surroundings

Situated conveniently along Route 31 in Somerset, PA, the park sits at an elevation of approximately 2,300 feet. This location provides a refreshing high-altitude climate that keeps the air crisp and cool even during the hottest summer months. The park is nestled in a high valley between two major mountain ridges, surrounded by lush woodlands and the gentle waters of Kooser Run, which winds through the property and feeds the park's central lake.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground at Kooser is well-maintained and caters to modern RV travelers while retaining its rustic charm. The park offers sites equipped with electric hookups ranging up to 50 amps, and select premium sites feature full-service water and sewer connections.

  • Modern bathhouse facilities with warm showers and flush toilets
  • A sanitary dump station available for all registered campers
  • Picnic areas featuring historic stone pavilions and charcoal grills

Recreation is centered around the 4-acre Kooser Lake, which is a designated trout-stocked water and features a sandy beach area for swimming during the summer season.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Staying here puts you in the center of the best outdoor recreation in the Laurel Highlands. You are just minutes away from Laurel Hill State Park, which offers miles of additional hiking trails and a larger lake for boating. History buffs should prioritize a visit to the Flight 93 National Memorial, located just a short drive to the east. For those visiting in the colder months, the park serves as a quiet basecamp for exploring the slopes at Seven Springs Mountain Resort or Hidden Valley Resort.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for RVers who prefer a small, intimate campground over a sprawling commercial resort. It is a fantastic choice for trout anglers, nature photographers, and families looking for a classic Pennsylvania camping experience. If you value historic charm, quiet evenings by a campfire, and a sense of solitude within a mountain landscape, Kooser State Park is the perfect fit for your travel style in Somerset County.

Spent so much of my childhood at this park. It is so amazing to visit. Beautiful in the fall and winter and the cabins are just perfect for a little getaway!!!!

Awesome campground. Half of my group had cell service other half did not. The fire pits that are next to the cabins are really great - designed for good airflow to keep a fire going! We loved cabin #27, there were 2 little bedrooms and an additional lofted bed area ☺️ we hiked at Laurel Hill SP, but had a lovely stay at Kooser.

Small, quiet, clean campground. We loved the size, though someone with younger kids may want more to do. The two trails are 2.5mi total and we had a good time on the hike. Would definitely come back!

This is the second time we stayed here. I don't like camping too close to others. We happened to get the same spot as last year. Very relaxing with a stream running behind camper, and trees on both sides.

We had a good time camping here. We were here for 2 nights on our way home from Maine and needed somewhere to stay to visit some of the national parks in the area. We hit 3 and got to enjoy the evening here. I did like they had a washer and dryer. Luckily I had enough quarters. Bring quarters if you think you'll need laundry. No change machine . The bathrooms were very clean. It was a small quite park
