Kootenai/North Dickey Lake

Overview

North Dickey Lake Campground offers a quintessential Montana lakeside experience within the Kootenai National Forest. Known for its remarkably clear, turquoise waters and dense forest canopy, this site serves as a serene retreat for those looking to disconnect. While it is managed under the Libby-based forest district, the park provides a rugged, natural setting that prioritizes the beauty of the Northern Rockies over modern resort luxuries.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Northwest Montana, the park is nestled among towering larch and Douglas fir trees that provide ample shade and privacy. The campground sits at an elevation that keeps summers mild and pleasant. Visitors are treated to a landscape shaped by glacial activity, featuring a sandy shoreline and views of the surrounding mountains. Its proximity to Highway 93 makes it accessible while remaining deep enough in the woods to feel secluded.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional Forest Service site, the park focuses on essential outdoor comforts. Travelers will find paved parking spurs suitable for many RVs, though there are no electric or water hookups available. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring for evening campfires. The facility includes vault toilets and potable water via hand pumps. A highlight of the park is the developed day-use area, which features a boat launch and a swimming dock.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water recreation is the primary draw, with boating, kayaking, and fishing being popular daily activities on the 800-acre lake. For those willing to explore further, the Ten Lakes Scenic Area is nearby, offering miles of hiking trails through high-alpine terrain. Anglers often head to the Kootenai River for world-class fly fishing. In the autumn, the surrounding forest transforms with vibrant gold colors, making it a prime spot for nature photography.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for dry campers and boondockers who value natural beauty and water access over full utility hookups. Families will appreciate the shallow swimming areas and the quiet, community-oriented atmosphere of the campground. It is a perfect match for travelers seeking a peaceful lakeside basecamp while exploring the wild corridors of the Kootenai National Forest or those passing through on a scenic Montana road trip.

Great the first night. Then, the circus came to town. The group next to us was crazy loud well into the night. Camp host was nowhere to be found. Aside from that, the setting is beautiful.

We enjoyed our stay last night in this campground. The sites are spacious and shaded. The lake view is beautiful. We saw turkeys and bats and heard the call of a loon, which nest in the area. Amenities are limited, but there are vault toilets, water, a boat launch, and a camp host.
