Kootenay/Redstreak
Overview
Redstreak Campground serves as the primary base for exploring the southern gateway of Kootenay National Park. Situated on a plateau high above the village of Radium Hot Springs, this Parks Canada facility offers a blend of authentic wilderness and modern convenience. Unlike many national park campgrounds, Redstreak provides a range of service levels to accommodate everything from small tents to large motorhomes, making it a cornerstone for regional tourism in the Rocky Mountains.
Location & Surroundings
The park is nestled within a lush forest of Douglas fir and ponderosa pine, providing a cool canopy during the warm summer months. Because it is perched on a ridge, many areas of the campground offer stunning glimpses of the Columbia Valley and the Purcell Mountains. Travelers often encounter resident bighorn sheep wandering through the loops, adding to the immersive natural atmosphere that defines this scenic British Columbia destination.
Amenities & Park Features
This campground is notably well-equipped, offering a variety of site types to suit different camping styles. Key features available at the park include:
- Full hookup sites with power, water, and sewer connections.
- Clean shower buildings and modern flush toilets.
- Shared kitchen shelters equipped with wood stoves.
- An on-site playground and interpretive amphitheater for evening programs.
These facilities ensure that whether you are in a tent or a large motorhome, your stay is comfortable and convenient while remaining close to nature.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The highlight of the area is the short, scenic 1.8-kilometer trail that connects the campground directly to the world-famous Radium Hot Springs pools. Visitors can also hike the Sinclair Canyon trail for dramatic views of the limestone walls or explore the Redstreak Restoration Trail. The proximity to the village allows for easy access to local dining and shopping, balancing rugged outdoor adventure with the comforts of a mountain resort town.
Who This Park Is Best For
Redstreak is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who want to experience the grandeur of a national park without sacrificing modern utilities. It is a fantastic choice for families due to the accessible trails and educational opportunities provided by the park staff. Because the park can accommodate large RV rigs, it is also a preferred stop for long-haul travelers looking for a serene, professionally managed environment as they navigate the Kootenay Rockies.

This campground has some issues. 1. They charge you a nightly fee that of course you need to reserve online that they charge extra fees for, then they charge you a $17 PER NIGHT "Fire Permit" 🤮 just to have a campfire. So it ends up being like 70 bucks a night! 2. They have playgrounds for kids on their map and advertised, but the playgrounds were removed at some point. What the heck! My kids were so disappointed! 3. The roads are in terrible condition, and the facilities are seriously dated which would be fine if it didnt cost a small fortune to stay there. 4. The sites are CRAMPED. Your neighbour is literally under 10 feet from you, its like being in a sardine can and not at all enjoyable. If I wanted to go to an RV park there are plenty around with far better amenities for cheaper! For a national park campground its terrible. We wont be coming back.

This campground is nice, probably not what we were personally looking for but it’s good. It’s super chilled, very shaded and fairly quiet. There is a walk down a big hill to the town with a few bars and shops (not like Banff). Toilets and shower block needs updating, very old. Staff were super friendly and so helpful (5*)

The wardens are helpful plenty of showers and toilets. Wood for fires. Good trails from the site to the Hot Springs and sinclair creek or just down into town. Lots of bins . Electric points only some have sewage and water disposal at your berth pitch but has a main disposal plot to empty and top up.

This is a nice full service national park campground, but it is probably up for a bit of a renovation of the infrastructure. Our nearest bathroom did not have hot water working, but no one told us, so we discovered it during ice showers. This campground has a good number of deer and other critters, which was a pleasant surprise. Family entertainment was lots of fun. We took in the Taylor Swift Airs Tour, which uses popular culture to educate about birds at risk.

We have stayed here twice now and have enjoyed our stay both times! The location is prime and absolutely beautiful. The trails and hikes available in Redstreak are great and range from easy to moderate. The sites are nice and big, decently spread apart and tons of mature trees. Tons of wildlife in the area which is exciting to see! The bathrooms and showers are clean and there are lots of them. There are dishes sinks at most of the bathrooms and water taps throughout the park. Although not a negative for us, there is limited cell service at the campground. The only negative is that not all sites have a fire pit. We did not have a fire pit but we did checkout the woodpile which looked great and seeing the other sites having fires the wood seems fairly dry considering the amount of rain the area has received over the last month.
