Overview

L.L. Stub Stewart State Park offers a unique blend of modern convenience and rugged forest beauty. Nestled in the foothills of the Northern Oregon Coast Range, this expansive state park spans over 1,600 acres of lush woodland. It serves as a premier destination for travelers looking to escape the city without sacrificing comfort, providing a well-maintained full-hookup campground known as Dairy Creek. Whether you are looking for a weekend retreat or a base for outdoor adventure, the park delivers a tranquil atmosphere centered on nature and recreation.

Location & Surroundings

Located just 34 miles west of Portland near Buxton, OR, the park sits on land that was once a thriving logging operation. The terrain is characterized by rolling forested hills and clearings that offer stunning views of the surrounding valley. Its proximity to the Highway 26 corridor makes it an accessible stop for those traveling toward the Oregon Coast. Despite being near the metropolitan area, the dense canopy of Douglas fir and maple trees creates a profound sense of seclusion and wilderness immersion.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is exceptionally RV-friendly, featuring two loops at the Dairy Creek Campground with 78 full-hookup sites. Visitors have access to clean restrooms, hot showers, and a convenient dump station. For those traveling with horses, the Hares Canyon Waystation offers specialized equestrian camping facilities. One of the standout features is the Discovery Depot, an interpretive center that provides educational displays about the local ecosystem and history, making the park feel like a complete destination rather than just a place to park.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them busy, starting with the Banks-Vernonia State Trail, a 21-mile paved rail-to-trail path perfect for cycling and walking. The park itself boasts over 25 miles of multi-use trails, including dedicated zones for mountain biking and horseback riding. Disc golf fans can test their skills on the world-class 18-hole Hilltop course, which offers challenging play and panoramic vistas. Additionally, the nearby town of Vernonia provides charming local shops and a glimpse into Oregon’s timber heritage.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal fit for active families and outdoor adventurers who want a structured camping environment with immediate trail access. It is particularly well-suited for mountain bikers and hikers who appreciate having a variety of difficulty levels right at their doorstep. Because of the spacious, paved sites, it is also a great choice for big-rig owners seeking a reliable state park experience. If you value a quiet, forested setting with modern utility connections, this Buxton gem is a perfect match for your travel style.

Great campsites. Everyone was level, spacious and generally made good use of the environment to feel private. Wonderfull trails andd best bike path i have found so far. The frisby golf course was a bit to wild for me due to mobility issues, but would be nice if you are extremely mobile. Full hookups in all sites I observed. I will return.

We came for disc golf and had a great host assist us and it was a really nice day. The courses we saw listed online where not currently available so instead of 18 and 9 pins there was 9 and 3. But they where super fun, just not something I'd drive two hours for again.

This camp site by far is the cleanest and most maintained camp site we have ever stayed at. The staff is super friendly and helpful. With the versatility of hiking, biking, and a family friendly place. The pads for the RVs are huge. They have spots for RVs, tents and cabins. We will definitely be back here again!

One of my favorite spots to camp — nice views and close to town. There are many hiking trails and a day-use area where you can watch the stars at night. The park hosts are very helpful, and the bathrooms are clean

First time visiting this particular Oregon State Park. First impressions were good, everything is cleaned and well maintained. Throughout our stay things just got better. Bathrooms and showers were both maintained immaculately the entire week of our stay. Seems like almost every camper had a dog (including us) and there is no dog poop to be found. Campers do a great job cleaning up after furry friends. Only downside to this park is the almost non-existent cell phone service. We have Verizon so YMMV. Overall 5/5 definitely will be returning in the future.
