Just passing through this campground and it was gorgeous. Very scenic views and very well maintained. There's pavilions for dry camping, fire pits, BBQs, and picnic tables at every site. The bathrooms are well maintained and theres ample parking. The point of this plateau overlooks the Red River and Rio Grande convergence point with a trail that brings you down into the canyon, straight to more campsites and to the river access. When I visited, this trail was closed. I'm assuming theyre doing maintenence on it. Overall a very beautiful campsite. You can hear the river, owls, and coyotes at night while you eat youre smores.

Beautiful views where red river meets the Rio grande river. Only downside was the trail down into the canyon was closed.

Beautiful spot to see the gorge and a have a picnic. Saw lots of bicycle riders doing the loop ride from visitors center on designated paved lane next to the 1 way road. The main trail down to the gorge was closed. Facilities have no water, no flush toilets. Disappointed that the main road into the visitors center was shut down to a 1 way lane having to wait for a pilot car to take you out.

The views here are amazing. This is where the Rio Grande meets the Red River. Each river is at the bottom of a 700 foot deep gorge. There is a covered group area with several tables and grills. Also the area has lots of smaller stone picnic tables. There are a few camping sites and a terrific trail along the rim that goes on for several miles. There used to be a trail to the bottom of the gorge, but it was closed, so the site is not as popular as before. Other nearby campgrounds--Big Arsenic--have trails to the bottom that are open. There is no water available at La Junta, but there are park toilets available. Other camping locations in the monument have better camping sites I love to come here and sit and feel the wind and watch hawks floating in the updraft from the gorge floor. A beautiful, transcendent place.

Beautiful camp ground, overlooking the canyon ridge. Sadly the La Junta trail is closed for the foreseeable future which is the trail that takes you down to the river. Definitely a very nice place to stop and camp for a few days Stoughton, the overlook itself is worth it!

Wear comfortable shoes and have plenty of water. It is worth the effort. See where the Red River and the Rio Grande rivers meet. Unencumbered views. Majestic!
