La Mauricie/Riviere-A-La-Peche Campground

Overview

Located within the breathtaking expanse of La Mauricie National Park, the La Mauricie/Rivière-à-la-Pêche Campground serves as a premier destination for those seeking a deep connection with the Quebec wilderness. This year-round facility offers a serene environment where the sounds of the forest replace the hum of the city. As the park's largest campground, it provides an authentic natural experience combined with the convenience of organized facilities, making it a staple for regional travelers and international visitors alike.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is situated near the Saint-Jean-des-Piles entrance in Shawinigan, QC, nestled within the undulating hills of the Laurentian Mountains. Surrounded by a dense canopy of maple and pine trees, the site offers immediate proximity to the Saint-Maurice River. The geography here is defined by ancient rock formations and dozens of pristine lakes, providing a dramatic backdrop for every campsite and a sense of true northern seclusion just a short drive from urban centers.

Amenities & Park Features

While the sites prioritize a rustic feel, they cater well to modern RVers with various features designed for comfort. The campground includes:

  • Electric hookups at many sites for convenient power access.
  • Modern service buildings equipped with hot showers and laundry.
  • A centrally located dump station and potable water station.

Several large kitchen shelters are available for meal preparation during inclement weather, and the nearby service center offers limited Wi-Fi access and essential park information to help you plan your daily excursions.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find themselves at the trailhead of the park’s most famous paths, including the Mekinac Trail, which offers stunning views of the river valley. The park’s winding internal road is a favorite for road cyclists seeking challenging climbs and scenic descents. During the warmer months, visitors can head to the nearby Cascades area for natural swimming holes, while winter transforms the campground into a hub for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing adventures right from your doorstep.

Who This Park Is Best For

Rivière-à-la-Pêche is ideal for active adventurers and families who prefer hiking boots over high-end luxury resorts. It is a perfect fit for RVers who enjoy a "boondocking-plus" style, valuing tranquility and star-filled skies over site-side sewer connections. Whether you are a solo trekker looking to conquer steep trails or a couple seeking a quiet forest retreat, this park delivers a rugged yet comfortable Quebec camping experience.

The great place for camping. The kids is welcomed. It would be really helpful if you could speak the French. The beautiful, natural views you will easily get around. But it is a bit chilly in the first night.

This is one of the nicest, cleanest, equipped campgrounds I have ever stayed in. I have camped coast to coast across Canada and the USA and this is the best. I don't like RV parks so that is not what I'm comparing to. This has private sites with dense trees between. The heated picnic area and showers are amazing. Plus, there are lots to do and see around the park.

Great camping with lots of options right at the Saint-Jean des Piles entrance. Plots are well maintained and staff is very kind and helpful. Restrooms and showers have been recently renovated and are very clean

Incredible job by Parks Canada. We stayed here in late August 2019. This is one of the nicest campgrounds I have ever stayed in. Every site that we saw was private, elevated, and surrounded by lush vegetation. We could not see our neighbours. The staff at the front kiosk were excellent. Parks Canada has upgraded the facilities to a new level. I wish the parks in Atlantic Canada would be as well kept as this one. Being close to urban centres it fills up fast, so book your spots early. We enjoyed this campground so much we wanted to stay a second nights. We were very lucky to be able to renew our spot for a second night, it is unusual, especially if you are here on a weekend.

Beautiful campground spot located in the national park. All the facilities are very clean, spacious shower. In the little chalet, there is a spot where you can do the dishes, the laundry or use the large tables if it rains. Several drinkable water faucet along the way but not in the park itself, so make sure you have plenty with you before hiking. If you have a tent, be aware that the soil is made of gravel. So, you'll need a hammer to plant the stakes or a rock found during the hike! The majority of the hiking paths start behind the main pavillon and you'll have a splendid view of the lakes around. The trails are very well maintained. This park offer a lot of snow activities as well! Definitely a place to discover, the staff is young, knowledgeable and friendly. Worth the road trip to get to it, if you do not leave in the area. Make sure to know how you'll go to and leave the park, as hitchhiking is not that popular in Quebec!
