Laguna Seca Recreation Area
Overview
Laguna Seca Recreation Area offers a unique camping experience situated within the coastal hills of the Monterey Peninsula. Known primarily for hosting the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, this park is a premier destination for motorsports enthusiasts. Beyond the excitement of the track, the area serves as a expansive landscape of rolling terrain, providing a peaceful retreat during non-event dates. Managed by Monterey County, the park ensures a well-maintained environment for travelers seeking a distinct California experience that balances adventure with natural beauty.
Location & Surroundings
The park is strategically located off Highway 68, nestled between the agricultural hub of Salinas and the scenic coastal city of Monterey. The surrounding terrain is characterized by steep ridges and scenic overlooks that offer panoramic views of the Salinas Valley. Visitors are treated to a landscape filled with native oak trees and golden grasslands. This elevated location provides a crisp, breezy atmosphere, often sitting just above the coastal fog line, making it a refreshing stop for those exploring the Central Coast.
Amenities & Park Features
Accommodations at the park cater to a variety of RV styles across several distinct campgrounds. The facility provides full hookup sites featuring water, electricity, and sewer connections, while other sections offer water and electric only for a more rustic feel. Guests have access to essential facilities including clean restrooms and showers to ensure a comfortable stay. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. The park's layout is designed to accommodate a range of vehicles, though the hilly geography adds a unique character to the site arrangements.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
While the racetrack is a major draw, the park is only a short drive from the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the historic charm of Cannery Row. Outdoor enthusiasts can take advantage of the adjacent Fort Ord National Monument, which offers miles of trails for hiking and world-class mountain biking. For a change of pace, travelers can visit the nearby wineries of the Carmel Valley or explore the world-renowned 17-Mile Drive in Pebble Beach. The park serves as an excellent central hub for exploring the entire Monterey County region.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is a must-visit for motorsports fans who want to stay in the heart of the action during world-class racing events. However, it also appeals to active travelers looking for a central basecamp to explore the Monterey Peninsula without the high costs of coastal hotels. It is an ideal choice for families who enjoy hiking and biking directly from their campsite. If you appreciate expansive vistas and a sense of place that captures the spirit of California’s rugged hills, this park will fit your travel style perfectly.

So cool. 16% grade driving up which is crazy but fun- views of all of Monterey! The race track is sick and my kids loved seeing the racing school in progress throughout the week and weekend. 20 mins outside Monterey and very peaceful. The views are incredible. The sites are totally flat and paved but good enough. Bathrooms are cleaned every day and trash is taken out regularly. If you want quaint, great views and some action, RV here!

This campground was great! Super clean, well maintained, and felt safe knowing they had security around the clock. Best of all, we had such a great time with family and friends. Truly an unforgettable experience — can’t wait to come back.

This campground was just ok. Good location and reasonable price. They clearly informed us the water was not potable so we brought two jugs of water; however, we left the water jugs at our campsite for the day and took our vehicle (which is what we were camping in) and when we came back someone had dumped out both the jugs (which were mostly full) and thrown them out. That was super frustrating. When I called the night staff they said there was nothing they could do. We got by with our half a water bottle we had left from the day. It seems like there must have been a lack of coordination with the staff and they didn't mark that our campsite was still reserved for another night, so that was not great. Otherwise the campsite was fine. Facilities were very clean. Raceway was loud but that's to be expected and wasn't noisy too early or too late.

My family and I have been camping here for over 10 years! Great spot, super clean, good service, hot showers, and good weather for the most part. I recommend it!

Such a great trip south a bit of everything! Mountain biking, cycling on the track, and watching some cars practice. I'm glad we learned about the non-potable water ahead of time so we were prepared.
