Lake Alma
Overview
Lake Alma State Park offers a peaceful retreat nestled in the hills of southern Ohio. This 103-acre park is centered around the serene 60-acre Lake Alma, providing a quiet atmosphere far from the hustle of urban life. As a destination, it prioritizes a nature-focused experience, where RVers can enjoy the sounds of the forest and the gentle ripples of the water. It is a well-maintained state park that balances outdoor recreation with the simple comforts of modern camping.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just outside of Wellston, OH, the park sits within the scenic Appalachian plateau. The landscape is defined by rolling hills and dense woodlands that provide excellent shade for many of the campsites. The area is characterized by its geological history, featuring sandstone outcroppings and lush greenery. Its secluded location makes it an ideal spot for those looking to disconnect, yet it remains accessible for travelers exploring the south-central Ohio region.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground at Lake Alma includes both electric and non-electric sites, catering to a variety of RV sizes. Visitors have access to modern shower facilities and clean restroom buildings throughout the grounds. For those traveling with pets, the park features a dedicated fenced-in dog park, allowing furry companions to run off-leash. On-site recreation includes a public beach for swimming, multiple boat launches for electric-powered vessels, and several well-marked hiking trails that wind through the hills and around the lake.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do within and just beyond the park boundaries. The lake is a popular spot for fishing for bass and bluegill, while the calm waters are perfect for kayaking or canoeing. Just a short drive away, the city of Wellston offers local dining and small-town charm. For those willing to venture further, the vast expanses of the Wayne National Forest offer additional hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities, making Lake Alma a great base camp for regional exploration.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for travelers who prefer a quiet, rustic setting over a high-activity resort. It is a perfect fit for families looking for a safe environment to swim and hike, or for retirees seeking a tranquil stopover. Because the lake restricts gas-powered motors, it remains a haven for those who appreciate peace and quiet. If your travel style involves slow mornings by the water and evening campfires under a canopy of trees, Lake Alma will feel like home.

Beautiful state park. Perfect for walking your dog and having a picnic.

Camping here whether in a camper or in a tent is a good time. There's a decent amount of woods around for the kids to play. The lake has plenty of activities and not far from the Hocking hills state park.

We had a 2 nights stay at Alma Lake State Park. This is the first time camping at this location. It was toward the middle to latter part of Sept. 2025. Arriving there was not too difficult, we came in from US 50 and down Oh-93. It is a one way road in and around the lake to the check-in station. Checking in was easy since we had reservations. I booked an electric site only, so we had to take on water for showers and washing dishes and toilet purposes. At the entrance is the dump station, there is potable water on the left just after the dump. At first we were kinda of skeptical about this place cause when we were looking for our spot there were two guys sitting by a campfire with cases of beer and playing music rather loudly. At night fall the music went off and it was super quiet. The spots are very close together, and the vault toilets leave alot to be desired. But this is why we have a restroom in our RV.(Sorry tent campers) the whole campground is in a valley surrounded by hills. It is one way in, one way out. In the center is a more modern wash and restroom facility with showers. I cannot comment on that one since we did not go into it. Would we visit this location again, probably would. Sorry no pics, this was a device free camping trip for me, wanted to be unplugged for the weekend!
