Lake Ashtabula - COE/Eggerts Landing

Overview

Lake Ashtabula - Eggerts Landing is a serene recreation area managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers along the shores of the Sheyenne River reservoir. Located in the heart of the Sheyenne River Valley, this park offers a classic North Dakota outdoor experience for travelers seeking tranquility. Visitors will find a well-maintained campground that balances natural prairie beauty with essential modern comforts. It serves as a quiet retreat for those looking to immerse themselves in the rolling hills and expansive water views that define this region.

Location & Surroundings

Positioned just north of Valley City, the park sits on the eastern shore of a 27-mile-long reservoir. The surrounding landscape features rugged coulees and lush greenery that contrast sharply with the blue waters of the lake. Because it is slightly removed from major highways, visitors enjoy minimal traffic noise and stunning night skies perfect for stargazing. The area is a vital corridor for migratory birds, making the surroundings feel alive with local wildlife and songbirds throughout the summer camping season.

Amenities & Park Features

The facility provides several spacious campsites equipped with 30 and 50-amp electrical hookups, making it suitable for various RV sizes. While the setting is more rustic than a private resort, it includes essential amenities such as potable water, a convenient dump station, and clean restroom facilities. Boaters will appreciate the high-quality concrete launch ramp, while families can utilize the picnic shelters and open green spaces for gatherings. Many sites offer direct views of the lake with easy access to the shoreline for bank fishing.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Anglers often visit this destination for its exceptional walleye and northern pike fishing, which remains a primary draw for the region. Beyond the water, visitors can explore the nearby city of Valley City, famous for its historic bridges and the massive Hi-Line Railroad Bridge. Hiking a portion of the North Country National Scenic Trail, which winds through the Lake Ashtabula area, provides an excellent way to experience the valley on foot. For history buffs, the Barnes County Historical Society offers a look into the region’s local heritage.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for budget-conscious RVers who appreciate the value and natural reliability of COE campgrounds. It is a perfect fit for outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize fishing and boating over programmed resort activities. If you are a traveler seeking a peaceful environment to watch the sunset or a family looking for a simple, nature-focused getaway without the crowds, Eggerts Landing provides the quietude and space that many commercial parks lack.

Probably THE best, most beautiful, cleanest campground we've stayed in. And we stay in A LOT!! Lakefront, stunning!

Nice and secluded campsites, level and easy to back in. Water available at park entrance. Clean restrooms. Nice beach area, lake was green (normal for August in ND) but had fun fishing. A bit challenging to try and reach anyone via phone (stayed home one night due to storms) -called two numbers and they each gave me the other, but initial booking online was smooth.

This campground has some very nice more secluded camp spots. The landing pads are gravel, most are surrounded by trees providing a nice wind break from the ND winds. The roads are mostly gravel except around the very nice playground, beach and flushing toilet/bath house. The bathhouse is clean, not even yucky cobwebs! There is also a minimal maintained hiking path through the trees within the camping area. A boat boat dock close by do you can get your fishing or recreational boat on the water for some more entertainment. There is a designated fish cleaning station. Dogs are welcome on leashes, only burn local wood. They do have zebra muscles in the lake, so drain and wash the boat very well! Paved road throughout and full hook ups would make this campground 5 star.

Dump station was clean, water hoses looked brand new but no water available. Two water spigot were found, one in Day use area and one by the pay station close to the host site. The flush toilets and showers are on the outside of the camping loop so that would be a long walk from the back of the loop. We didn't use them so no report on that. There is a vault toilet in the back of the loop. We didn't use it but another camper said it was not very clean. The camp sites are wooded and ours had a trail to the lake. The sites could tend to be muddy with a lot of rain. Reservations are posted on the board at the pay station and reserved sites were also marked on the post. It was a nice, quiet stay!
