Lake Casitas Recreation Area
Overview
Lake Casitas Recreation Area offers a sprawling retreat nestled in the scenic Ojai Valley near Ventura. As a premier destination for campers seeking a blend of natural beauty and outdoor activity, the park centers around its massive reservoir. Known as a world-class bass fishing destination, this location provides a serene escape from the hustle of the Southern California coast while remaining easily accessible for weekend travelers and long-term RVers alike. The area is celebrated for its quiet evenings and expansive night skies.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just inland from the Pacific Ocean, the park is surrounded by rolling hills and majestic oak trees that define the Ventura County landscape. The proximity to the Los Padres National Forest ensures that visitors are never far from rugged wilderness and breathtaking mountain views that change with the seasons.
Amenities & Park Features
The park accommodates a variety of camping styles with over 400 campsites catering to various rig sizes. Many areas feature full RV hookups including water, electricity, and sewer connections for maximum convenience. For seasonal fun, the park hosts the Casitas Water Adventure, a popular splash park for children. Additional facilities include well-maintained restroom facilities, hot showers, a camp store for supplies, and several boat launch ramps for those bringing their own watercraft or looking to rent one on-site.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the park boundaries, the charming town of Ojai offers unique boutiques and farm-to-table dining experiences. Visitors can explore the Ventura Botanical Gardens or spend an afternoon at the nearby beaches just a short drive away. Within the recreation area, enthusiasts enjoy a professional-grade disc golf course and miles of multi-use trails for bird watching and hiking, making it easy to stay active and engaged with the local environment throughout your stay.
Who This Park Is Best For
This recreation area is ideal for families looking for a structured camping environment with plenty of space for kids to play and explore safely. It is a primary haven for serious anglers hoping to catch trophy-sized fish from the shore or a boat. If you prefer a rustic yet well-equipped setting that favors quiet evenings and nature observation over a high-traffic resort scene, Lake Casitas provides the perfect balance of comfort and wilderness for your next adventure.

Great place for camping, fishing, disc golf and more! We’re lucky to have access to this amazing lake! There are lots of camping options for groups or quiet camping in the Lakeside overflow (pro tip). I’m sure it’s full all of the time, during the summer, when water slides are open, so plan accordingly. Don’t forget to play the disc golf courses! Get out and check it out!

Great lake. If you want to take a moring run or gust go fishing. You can rent a boat or or fish from shore. The campsites are very nice there is a lot of room to spread out. The bathrooms were very stinky and they felt dirty. I would bring your own water to the lake just because the faucets look very used in my opinion. Over all it is a great lake to do a day trip or to camp out at.

What a disaster. Staff didn’t seem to care at all. I booked a 50 A back-in, then changed dates and asked for a pull-through. They offered one—but didn’t mention it was only 30 A. I arrived, unhitched, and discovered the 30 A limitation. No apology, no help. They did have a 50 A for one night, so I accepted, but they told me I’d have to move and unhook four times over seven nights to stay as booked. They refused to contact other guests to see if they could switch spots, despite the extra fees I paid ($600+, including a $100 pet fee and change fees). I saw no effort to help, and their tone was rude. Also, arrival was disorganized—no map, no directions, no gate-hour info until I asked. Grounds are littered with trash, including balloons, yet I was charged $100 for pets. Yes, the campground is reasonably nice—but it’s way overpriced for the poor service and dirty grounds.

We stayed at Casitas Campground and had a great time. Our campsite overlooked the lake, which made for a beautiful view every morning and evening. We spent a day at the waterpark and loved relaxing in the lazy river. The Little Café at the boat launch had tasty food—on the expensive side, but worth it. The food truck in front of the waterpark was also good, though a bit pricey. The campsites themselves are spacious and well-maintained, making it easy to spread out and enjoy the outdoors. Overall, a fun and relaxing place for a camping trip.

We stayed at Site M at Lake Casitas for a weekend camping trip with 12 people across two sites. The lakefront views were absolutely beautiful, with a gentle hillside providing a clear line of sight to the water. It’s peaceful, scenic, and especially great for families looking to relax in nature. Each campsite had room for 2–3 medium tents and 2–3 cars, though only one vehicle is included per site. We didn’t realize until later that extra cars cost $30 each—this detail was buried in the long confirmation email and not easy to spot. Worth checking ahead of time. The kids enjoyed the small playground right by the water—not fancy but perfect for burning off energy with a gorgeous lake backdrop. The fire pit had a built-in grill (though a bit worn), which worked well for both BBQ and evening bonfires. Bring foil or a grill brush if you want it cleaner, but it does the job. Restrooms were just okay—not very clean, and they only had toilets and urinals, no sinks. There are water faucets spaced every 200–300 feet, which was helpful, but no showers available on-site (at least not nearby). Be prepared for that. We tried our luck at fishing—the water was clear and clean, and we spotted some 12–14” carp swimming close to shore. No bites this time (no carp bait!), but the area is safe for kids to skip rocks or dip their feet. There’s also a small flooded bridge between sites that seems like a great fishing or photo spot. The best part of the trip was simply the time spent together: campfire chats, grilled food, drinks, and even movie night with our own projector. Nature, family, laughter—it was the kind of weekend that stays with you.
