Overview
Overview
Lake Casitas Recreation Area offers a sprawling retreat nestled in the scenic Ojai Valley near Ventura. As a premier destination for campers seeking a blend of natural beauty and outdoor activity, the park centers around its massive reservoir. Known as a world-class bass fishing destination, this location provides a serene escape from the hustle of the Southern California coast while remaining easily accessible for weekend travelers and long-term RVers alike. The area is celebrated for its quiet evenings and expansive night skies.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just inland from the Pacific Ocean, the park is surrounded by rolling hills and majestic oak trees that define the Ventura County landscape. Because Lake Casitas serves as a primary drinking water source, there is no body contact or swimming allowed in the lake itself, which preserves a peaceful atmosphere and crystal-clear vistas. The proximity to the Los Padres National Forest ensures that visitors are never far from rugged wilderness and breathtaking mountain views that change with the seasons.
Amenities & Park Features
The park accommodates a variety of camping styles with over 400 campsites catering to various rig sizes. Many areas feature full RV hookups including water, electricity, and sewer connections for maximum convenience. For seasonal fun, the park hosts the Casitas Water Adventure, a popular splash park for children. Additional facilities include well-maintained restroom facilities, hot showers, a camp store for supplies, and several boat launch ramps for those bringing their own watercraft or looking to rent one on-site.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the park boundaries, the charming town of Ojai offers unique boutiques and farm-to-table dining experiences. Visitors can explore the Ventura Botanical Gardens or spend an afternoon at the nearby beaches just a short drive away. Within the recreation area, enthusiasts enjoy a professional-grade disc golf course and miles of multi-use trails for bird watching and hiking, making it easy to stay active and engaged with the local environment throughout your stay.
Who This Park Is Best For
This recreation area is ideal for families looking for a structured camping environment with plenty of space for kids to play and explore safely. It is a primary haven for serious anglers hoping to catch trophy-sized fish from the shore or a boat. If you prefer a rustic yet well-equipped setting that favors quiet evenings and nature observation over a high-traffic resort scene, Lake Casitas provides the perfect balance of comfort and wilderness for your next adventure.

We rented a trailer through RVshare and had it delivered to Lake Casitas. Campground was nice and clean. The biggest issue we had was the power going out for almost an hour. It was very hot that day and apparently the campground can't handle the draw from all the air conditioners running. Most of us were outside anyways since we are camping but I was also trying to cook food on my electric pellet grill when the power went out. So that was annoying. We did visit the Waterpark area. It's great for kids but not really worth it as an adult since you can't bring in an adult beverage refreshment and they don't sell them either. The only option if you want to relax is to float in the lazy river and get splashed by kids. There is no swimming pool to just lay in or simply chill. We wound up just sitting at one of the large entrances to the lazy river to simply sit in the water and relax. I will say we were able to sneak in a cocktail but they do check ur bags and water tumblers.

Beautiful lake and wildlife! We came during the week a few weeks ago and it was quiet and serene. We were the only people in the “Indian” campground. This weekend we are here and it is quite full, loud music until 11pm, noisy RC plane overhead at 8am, many drunk people driving on small roads with kids on bikes. My recomendation, come during the week or off season.

I’ve been going there for years, it’s a nice place but theyre getting greedy. 30 dollars for an additional vehicle per site, how do you justify that? Thats almost the cost of the actual site for Taking up a small piece of dirt. It makes no sense

Gorgeous campsite right next to the creek! Fell asleep listening to the flowing water and frogs. This particular campsite was too close to our neighbors who played their music late into the night. Worst part of the stay was the restrooms which were poorly maintained. There was a broken sanitization dispenser, no toilet paper, seat covers, and there was filth all over the floor. The number on the wall to request service does not reach anyone.

Lake Casitas Recreation Area is a large campground with a lot to offer, but it comes with some limitations to be aware of. Most of the sites are geared toward tent camping that have access to the lake. However, RV sites with full hookups are very limited. We stayed in site E2, which was level and had electric and water hookups, so that worked well for us. I travel with inflatable stand-up paddle boards and had to check them at the gate because the lake is not open for human contact, so no swimming or body contact. The on-site water adventure park looks fun, but it is not included in the camping price, and we were told by a ranger that prices will be increasing with only 1/2 day access this season (open Memorial Day weekend) due to high demand. It’s a very large campground, so bringing bikes is a great idea to make getting around easier. Overall, it’s a decent place to camp if you know what to expect, but the restrictions and added costs brought it down to a 3-star experience for us.
