Lake Corpus Christi
Overview
Lake Corpus Christi State Park offers a peaceful retreat on the shores of one of the largest impoundments in South Texas. Established in 1934, this historic park covers over 350 acres of brushland and shoreline, providing a scenic backdrop for RVers seeking a mix of water recreation and terrestrial beauty. It is a renowned destination for anglers and birdwatchers who appreciate the diverse ecosystem surrounding the 18,000-acre reservoir. The park provides a quiet, natural environment that serves as a perfect escape from the bustle of urban life.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just four miles southwest of Mathis, Texas, the park is easily accessible from Interstate 37. The landscape is characterized by mesquite and prickly pear cactus, which are typical of the South Texas brush country. Its proximity to the Nueces River ensures a constant flow of wildlife, while the expansive horizon over the lake provides spectacular sunsets for campers parked near the water’s edge. The surrounding terrain is relatively flat, making it easy to navigate for rigs of various sizes.
Amenities & Park Features
The park caters to various camping needs, featuring several loops with full hookup sites including 30 and 50-amp electricity. Campers can take advantage of the two lighted fishing piers, which allow for night fishing without needing a boat. Additional features include well-maintained restroom facilities with hot showers, multiple picnic pavilions, and a designated swimming area. For those traveling with watercraft, the park provides multiple boat ramps for easy lake access, ensuring that getting on the water is a seamless experience.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can explore the city of Mathis or take a short drive to the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi. Nature enthusiasts often visit the nearby Welder Wildlife Refuge for guided tours of the local flora and fauna. Within the park itself, the Birdwatching and Nature Trails offer excellent opportunities to spot local species like the Green Jay or the Greater Roadrunner, making it a premier hotspot for wildlife photography and quiet morning strolls.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal choice for families and outdoor enthusiasts who prefer a natural, rustic setting over a luxury resort atmosphere. It appeals strongly to fishing hobbyists looking for a reliable spot to catch trophy-sized catfish and largemouth bass. Because of its spacious sites and quiet nights, it is also a favorite for winter Texans seeking a temperate climate and a friendly community of fellow travelers during the colder months of the year.

Amazing experience camping at Lake Corpus Christi! Almost end of summer, and it was the perfect time to visit. We had a guest visiting us, which was such a pleasant surprise! :)

Awesome clean park. The fishing pier is so great. Lake level is low, but still enough water. We need rain over that lake.

Love this Park! Very clean, fishing pier has a fish cleaning station. Bathrooms at Oppossum Bend camping area do not have showers, but there is a public shower outside where you can rinse off. Paddle board and kayak rentals available. Plenty of open spaces for playing. Dogs allowed, must be on a leash, but they are not allowed into any of the buildings.

I spent almost two weeks here. It was mostly quiet. The lake was extremely low. The staff pleasant. The facilities decent. I stayed in the primitive with a bathhouse not far away. It was okay and I took a few showers fully clothed to cool down while I was there. It was hot. I would wake up with my sheets and pillows drenched. Not the parks fault mind you. I quickly figured out the best place to shower was the screened bathhouse near the full hookups. (Ugh.) The racoons were annoying but I got over it. It's nice having town so close. I would definitely go back as the price is right. Especially with the Texas state parks pass.

We absolutely loved this state park. We stayed in 2 cabins with our large family. Both were clean and comfortable. Sites are well spaced out. There was a lot of wildlife to see. Fishing, swimming, and kayaks were not packed, there's plenty of space for everyone. 5 stars! And the staff was all very friendly as well!
