Lake Herman

Overview

Lake Herman State Park offers a peaceful retreat on the shores of a stunning glacial lake in eastern South Dakota. Established to protect the natural beauty of this 225-acre area, the park provides a lush environment where native prairie grasses meet dense woodlands. RVers often choose this destination for its serene atmosphere and the opportunity to experience a classic state park setting that feels miles away from the modern world, despite its proximity to town.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just two miles west of Madison, the park is nestled on a scenic peninsula that extends into the water. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills and a diverse canopy of oak and hackberry trees that offer significant shade for campers. Visitors will appreciate the historical significance of the area, as the park preserves the Luce Cabin, an authentic log structure built by early settlers in the 1870s, which serves as a landmark for the region’s pioneer heritage.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features 71 sites, many of which provide electric hookups that accommodate various RV sizes. Guests have access to essential facilities and recreational features including:

  • Modern comfort stations with hot showers and flush toilets.
  • A centrally located dump station for convenient RV maintenance.
  • Easy access to boat ramps and a fishing dock for lake activities.
  • A playground and multiple picnic shelters for family gatherings.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Just a short drive away, the city of Madison offers local dining, shopping, and the campus of Dakota State University. A must-visit attraction is Prairie Village, a nearby living history museum featuring antique tractors and historic buildings. Within the park itself, the nature trails provide excellent opportunities for bird watching and spotting local wildlife like white-tailed deer. During the summer months, the lake is a hub for swimming, kayaking, and fishing for walleye or northern pike.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is an ideal match for nature enthusiasts and families who prioritize a quiet, landscape-driven camping experience over commercial resort features. It is particularly well-suited for anglers and boaters who appreciate easy water access from their basecamp. Travelers looking for a tranquil escape will find that Lake Herman offers a perfect balance of historic charm and outdoor recreation, making it a standout choice for an authentic South Dakota RV adventure.

We stayed in a little cabin—family of 4. It was perfect. So much cleaner than I had anticipated and with a bed for everyone. The grounds of the park were clean, outhouses just fine, and the plumbed bathrooms were SO clean, they looked brand new. Accessible firewood for $7 a bundle upon entry (we always just drop cash in the box) and gorgeous hiking trails—especially in October! There are multiple playgrounds and many beaches, too. We also found a few great dock fishing sites and a few great shore fishing sites. We will be back, many times.

Beautiful park. Lots of big trees, widely spaces campsites. Shower houses/restrooms are modern and clean. Ample dumpsters and trash cans throughout the park. Dump station is newer and very nicely set up. The park was very quiet, but we were there in the off season. I highly recommend if you need a night or a few to unwind in eastern South Dakota.

Love the trails and pollinator plot! We'll maintained facilities and excellent helpful staff. The Luce cabin is worth the stop especially if you are a fan of local history.
