Lake Kegonsa

Overview

Lake Kegonsa State Park offers a serene retreat on the shores of a 3,200-acre glacial lake in southern Wisconsin. Established to preserve the diverse landscapes of the region, the park features a mix of lush oak openings, rolling prairies, and marshlands. It provides a peaceful escape for RVers who prefer a natural environment over a high-traffic commercial resort setting. The park is well-regarded for its seasonal beauty and accessibility, making it a popular choice for local weekenders and cross-country travelers alike who appreciate the quiet beauty of the Midwest.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just southeast of Madison in Stoughton, the park is conveniently located near major travel corridors while feeling worlds away from the city bustle. The landscape is dominated by Lake Kegonsa, which translates to "Lake of Many Fishes" in the Ho-Chunk language. The surrounding area is characterized by fertile farmland and unique glacial deposits, creating a varied terrain for exploration. Visitors will enjoy the mature hardwood forests that provide ample shade and a sense of privacy within the campground loops during the warmer months.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground consists of 80 family sites, with many offering electric hookups suitable for various RV sizes. While the park maintains a rustic, natural vibe, essential modern comforts are provided to ensure a comfortable stay:

  • A central shower building and clean flush toilets.
  • A convenient on-site dump station and freshwater fill-up area.
  • A dedicated swimming beach and a separate pet-friendly swim area.

The well-maintained hiking trails, such as the White Oak Nature Trail, are easily accessible from the camping loops, offering a quick way to immerse yourself in the local flora and fauna.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities, with fishing and boating topping the list of popular pursuits on the water. Anglers often target walleye, northern pike, and panfish from the accessible pier or by boat. Beyond the park boundaries, the charming city of Stoughton offers a glimpse into Norwegian heritage with its local museums and boutiques. Nature lovers should also explore the Lower Yahara River Trail, which provides scenic biking and walking opportunities connecting to the larger Dane County trail system just a short drive away.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal destination for nature lovers and families who enjoy traditional outdoor activities like hiking, birdwatching, and swimming. Because of its quiet atmosphere and scenic vistas, it is perfect for those seeking a relaxing getaway without the noise and neon of a typical tourist-heavy park. It is particularly well-suited for mid-sized RVs and trailers looking for a scenic basecamp to explore southern Wisconsin or for travelers wanting a peaceful night near the Madison metropolitan area.

This park has a great view of the lake. The size of trails is not a long. Also bike friendly. The beach area was less crowded than my expectation. A good place to visit from Madison.

Decent State Park... they could have spaced out the camping sites more throughout the park instead of clustering them as much as they do. Also... bring in some SAND for your Beach... it's either too rocky or too mucky!

Lots of hiking trails. Gorgeous view of the lake. A park for kids. Nice camping areas also. Overall a great place. One of my favorite places to be.bAlways well maintained. Beautiful and fun stop all times of the year.

I got to Lake Kegonsa State Park a little later than planned, so I didn’t get to see much in the daylight. I came hoping to stargaze, but the skies were overcast that night. Still, the visit wasn’t a loss—walking through the meadow, I got to witness winter fireflies sparkling in the dark, which was pretty magical. The park has a good number of campsites, showers, and even a playground. I’d definitely come back—hopefully next time under a clear sky.

This is a good overall state park. The fact that it is on Lake Kegonsa is probably its best feature. The lake provides great opportunities for fishing, kayaking, boating, and it features a nice beach for swimming. The hiking trails here are good, but nothing that is really noteworthy. Everything is well maintained and taken care of.
