Lake Keomah
Overview
Lake Keomah State Park offers a serene escape for RV travelers seeking the natural beauty of southeastern Iowa. Located just a short drive from the city of Oskaloosa, this 366-acre state park provides a lush, wooded environment centered around a scenic 84-acre man-made lake. It is a place where the pace of life slows down, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a landscape characterized by rolling hills and vibrant seasonal foliage. The park is deeply rooted in history, with many structures reflecting the craftsmanship of the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Mahaska County, the park is conveniently located yet feels remarkably secluded. The surroundings are dominated by dense hardwood forests and open grasslands that attract a variety of local wildlife, including white-tailed deer and various waterfowl. The lake itself is the heart of the property, providing a mirror-like surface that reflects the tall oaks and hickories lining the shore. The quiet atmosphere is protected by regulations that limit boat traffic to electric motors only, ensuring a peaceful stay for all visitors.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground is well-equipped for RVers, offering numerous sites with electrical hookups that accommodate various rig sizes. Travelers have access to modern amenities, including a centrally located shower building, restrooms, and a convenient dump station for waste management. For recreation, the park features a designated swimming beach, multiple historic picnic shelters, and two accessible boat ramps. Well-maintained playgrounds and open grassy areas make it easy for families to enjoy outdoor games and communal gatherings during their stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the multi-use fitness trail that circles the lake, perfect for morning walks, jogging, or birdwatching. Fishing is a major draw here, with the lake regularly stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish. Beyond the park gates, visitors can explore the historic town of Oskaloosa, home to the Nelson Pioneer Farm and Museum, or enjoy local dining and shopping in the charming downtown square, which features beautiful period architecture and a vibrant community atmosphere.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is an ideal match for nature-loving families and couples who appreciate a quiet, rustic camping experience over high-energy commercial resorts. Because of its calm waters and shaded campsites, it is particularly well-suited for kayakers and anglers looking for a relaxing weekend on the water. If you value historic charm, scenic hiking paths, and the simple pleasures of a campfire under the stars, Lake Keomah provides the perfect backdrop for your next Iowa RV adventure.

I cannot believe how bad some of our state park campgrounds are. Gross bathroom, firepits overgrown with weeds and all bent up, no gravel driveways... grown over. Come on!! Spend money on these campgrounds please! Lake Keomah needs a complete redo of campsites and electrical boxes. Just kind of a mess. We were definitely disappointed when we pulled in.

While I am glad that the state of Iowa is working to address E.Coli levels in lakes, draining Lake Keomah has greatly impacted the experience at the park. The bathrooms at lakeside are closed and facilities throughout the park do not appear to be well maintained this year. I hope that this park can be brought to new life and invested in when the lake is filled in the future. At least I was able to get 300 pts for my Iowa State Parks Passport, so that was a win!

Don't legally pull off the road to use your phone. DNR officers think it's illegal to obey traffic phone use laws.

Progress pictures of Lake Keomah and the spring trees are flowering. It's a great time to enjoy the scenery!

Nice small state park with a swimming beach. Had a picnic off the beach a bit. Lots of geese around the lake and one of the private home owners on the other side was shooting to scare them off.
