Lake Livingston

Overview

Lake Livingston State Park offers a serene escape into the heart of the Texas Piney Woods. Established in 1977, this sprawling destination centers around one of the state's largest reservoirs, providing a massive playground for water enthusiasts. The park encompasses over 600 acres along the shoreline of the Trinity River's largest impoundment. The atmosphere is characterized by towering pines and quiet lakeside vistas, making it a staple for those seeking a mix of woodland solitude and aquatic adventure.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just over an hour north of Houston in Livingston, TX, the park serves as a gateway to the dense forests of East Texas. The surroundings are dominated by the 82,600-acre lake, which creates a unique microclimate of lush greenery and diverse wildlife. Visitors often notice the transition from urban sprawl to the tranquil canopy of the Piney Woods region, offering a distinct change of pace and scenery. The park’s location makes it a popular weekend retreat for city dwellers.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for modern travelers, offering a variety of camping options including full hookup RV sites with water, sewer, and electricity. For those who prefer a bit more shade, many sites are nestled deep within the trees. Key facilities include:

  • Three accessible boat ramps for easy lake entry.
  • Dedicated fish cleaning stations for successful anglers.
  • A well-stocked park store for gear and essentials.

Guests can also enjoy high-elevation views from the observation tower or rent kayaks and paddleboards for on-water exploration.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is the primary draw here, as the lake is widely considered the White Bass capital of Texas, though catfish and crappie are also abundant. Beyond the water, guests can explore miles of hiking and biking trails, such as the Pineywoods Nature Trail, which features a boardwalk through local wetlands. The nearby town of Livingston offers historical charm and local dining, while the Alabama-Coushatta Reservation is a short drive away, offering cultural insights and unique local events for travelers.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for active families and anglers looking for a well-maintained base camp with direct water access. It appeals to RVers who prioritize nature over resort-style luxuries, favoring large, wooded sites and outdoor recreation. The park's diverse ecosystem makes it a favorite for birdwatchers and photographers as well. Whether you are launching a boat for a weekend of fishing or seeking a quiet retreat among the pines, the park provides a classic Texas state park experience.

Lake Livingston has become one of my favorite places to go to unwind and relax. We frequent the park several times and year and have never been disappointed. The facilites are always clean and I like the fact that they have a vehicle that patrols the park on a regular basis. We have only stayed in the screened shelters and they are very nice. Would definatley recommend and will continue to go there in the future.

Very nice campground with lots of sites, in the middle of the piney forests of southeast Texas. We stayed for one week in one of the full-hookup sites. It was very easy to pull in & out of, and was almost prefectly level, requiring only 1" of blocks in the rear. Great hiking/riding trails, nice camp store, & what appears to be nice docks (we don't have a boat, but we did take our dogs walking down by the docks a couple of times). Interesting observation tower right by the waterside. We will definitely be coming back here again.

Park with beautiful sunset views of the lake. Sites are well spaced apart with all pads fairly long & level concrete pads. My only complaint about the site is that the sewer is half way across the pad & my bathroom & discharge is in the back of my trailer, so we didnt have a long enough line even with an extension to stay hooked to sewer. Bathrooms are older, but well-maintained. There are also many boat ramps, recreational areas, & educational programs at this park.

Awesome park. Great park staff. Clean restrooms and functioning showers. We got into the habit of showering more than once a day while we camped there in the heat. I love the shelter sites and the view of the lake. Be sure to bring a fan if you elect to stay in the shelters. A shower before bed also helps. Not much of a mosquito issue here even after two heavy rains. We got some mosquito activity on the trace trail near Hercules loop when you get close to the lake inlet but it wasn't bad. I enjoyed the trails and quiet roads during the week. The trails are not super rugged and are mostly flat. The park staff clears fallen trees regularly and maintains them well. There are charter boats in the area if you run out of luck on the shore. A fella named Loy Deason took us out and we caught like crazy over at beacon bay. Worth the visit for us and seems like greater Houston folks are the biggest demographic of visitors to the park.

The campsites are clean, spacious and shaded. We were able to fit our 19-ft trailer, are 17 ft boat and our truck all on the paved area of our site. Bathrooms and showers were good (plenty of hot water for showering!) The launch ramp area was well maintained and functional. Plenty of dock parking available so we could launch in the morning and leave the boat in the water all day. No overnight dock parking for boats. The lake gets choppy but the kids were able to make kneeboarding work! The park trails are well marked. Some were pretty muddy but most were usable. The kids loved riding their bikes on the trails and the adults enjoyed the trails for walking/running. Overall I would recommend this place for families who just want to have fun at the lake. We sure did!
