Lake Louise

Overview

Lake Louise State Recreation Area offers a classic Alaskan wilderness experience for RV travelers venturing off the Glenn Highway. This sprawling recreation area is centered around one of the state's most popular lakes, known for its expansive views and deep blue waters. Spanning over 20,000 acres, the interconnected lake system provides a vast playground for exploration and serves as a serene environment for off-the-beaten-path camping.

Location & Surroundings

Situated roughly 160 miles northeast of Anchorage and a short drive from the hub of Glennallen, the park is accessed via the Lake Louise Road at mile 160 of the Glenn Highway. The surroundings are characterized by dense spruce forests and the distant, snow-capped peaks of the Talkeetna Mountains. The scenic drive into the park often rewards travelers with glimpses of local wildlife, and the lake itself provides a stunning backdrop for colorful Alaskan sunsets that linger during the summer months.

Amenities & Park Features

While the park offers a rustic experience, it provides essential features for comfortable RVing. Amenities at this location include:

  • Two public boat launches for easy water access.
  • Well-spaced primitive campsites with fire rings.
  • Hand-pumped potable water and pit toilets.

There are no utility hookups, making it an ideal spot for those who enjoy self-contained dry camping in a well-maintained setting that prioritizes natural beauty over modern development.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the water, where anglers frequently catch trophy-sized Lake Trout and Arctic Grayling. Popular activities in the area include:

  • Exploring the interconnected lake system by boat or kayak.
  • Hiking the scenic shoreline trails for panoramic views.
  • Photographing local wildlife like moose, bears, and caribou.

The area is a haven for nature lovers, with frequent sightings of nesting waterfowl and pristine mountain vistas across the Copper River Basin.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is best for outdoor adventurers who value scenery and recreation over luxury resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for fishing enthusiasts and boaters who want direct, convenient access to the water. If you are looking for a peaceful lakeside retreat to disconnect and immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of the Alaskan interior, Lake Louise is a must-visit destination for your motorhome journey.

I have a cabin at Lake Louise and the lodge is a center Hub for the community. The staff is a family that really takes care of your needs. Super friendly, food is GREAT, and the atmosphere is perfect. I have stayed in one of their rooms last year and it was comfortable, has all the essentials to provide a nice stay at the lake. They also will launch your boat and provide parking for an affordable fee. Highly recommend.

Review: Very disappointed with how unfriendly the staff were. We walked in around 3pm and were greeted with a curt, "What do you want?" When we said we were hoping to get something to eat, the response was, "No you don't, not here," . There were no kitchen hours posted, and there was no need for the rudeness. It's sad too see this place decline—especially since I have fond memories of coming here as a kid with my dad, grabbing a soda and a bite to eat after camping. Really unfortunate. Response to Owner- I never saw a closed sign, the door was open. I wasn't upset the kitchen was closed I was upset by how poorly I was treated. I like to support local businesses, rather than chains if you look all of my other reviews they are all good 5 stars, your business is the only one with 1 star that should tell you how bad the service was. As someone who's career has been in sales, customer retention is a key part to being successful in business. All I can say is my next trip to Alaska I will not be going to your lodge.

I just spent two nights at Lake Louise Lodge and can't recommend it enough. The room was nice, the owners were friendly, the food was spectacular, and the setting was amazing.

Highly recommended. As someone that runs a family business, it’s great to see another family doing what they enjoy. The team is very friendly and cares about your needs. Highly recommend the fishing!

Lived in Alaska for 10 years finally made it up to Lake Louise lodge, and it did not disappoint. Stayed here mid June with my family. Family friendly, kids had plenty of room to romp around.
