Lake Louise Recreation Area

Overview

Lake Louise Recreation Area offers a tranquil escape on the South Dakota prairie, situated along the banks of a man-made lake created in 1932. This destination provides a classic state park experience where the connection to nature is the primary draw. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by sprawling grasslands and calm waters, making it a perfect spot for those looking to disconnect from the noise of interstate travel. The park's history as a regional gathering place continues today through its well-maintained grounds.

Location & Surroundings

Located approximately 14 miles northwest of Miller, the park sits in a region characterized by rolling plains and rich agricultural heritage. The landscape is dominated by the 164-acre lake, which was formed by damming Wolf Creek to provide a water sanctuary. This secluded setting offers an expansive horizon that is particularly stunning during sunrise and sunset, providing a true sense of the Great Plains atmosphere for those traveling through Hand County.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features 37 campsites, with 30 of those offering electrical hookups to accommodate modern RVs and trailers. Travelers have access to essential facilities including a dump station, a modern bathhouse with hot showers, and a fish cleaning station for the day's catch. For recreation, the park includes a boat ramp, a designated swimming beach, and a playground, ensuring that basic comforts are met while maintaining a rustic, outdoor-focused environment.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water activities are the main highlight, with the lake being popular for fishing bass and walleye. Hikers and birdwatchers can explore the surrounding tall-grass prairie to spot local wildlife like ring-necked pheasants and migratory waterfowl. Just a short drive away, the town of Miller provides local dining, fuel, and supplies, while the Crystal Park area offers additional green space and community events for visitors to explore during their stay.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for anglers and nature lovers who prefer a quiet, low-key atmosphere over a high-traffic resort. It is a fantastic choice for families seeking a safe, small-scale environment for swimming, biking, and evening campfires. Additionally, it serves as a great base for seasonal hunters exploring the South Dakota pheasant country or cross-country RVers looking for a peaceful, scenic overnight stop in the heart of the state.

Nice and shady camp spot, large picnic tables with a fire pit.

Stayed in one of the cabins in early July. So clean! Did notice a lack of available garbage cans in the park. Seems like we could only put our trash in the big dumpsters on our way out.

We stayed at 25 E. Nice and shady camp spot, large picnic tables with a fire pit. Close to the bathrooms. Through the bushes there was a path to the park. The park had a picnic shelter, slides, swings, etc. The bathrooms were nice and clean. The beach area had a nice sandy area with nice swimming. We kayaked, loved it! We have both Verizon and AT&T, we never had a problem with service. The sunsets were amazing! I highly recommend this campground.

Writing review based on experience at the West Campground. Online reservation process was very smooth. Reliably navigated to Lake Louise State Recreation Area using Google Maps. The West Campground campsites closer to the lake have ample shade. The West Campground has vault toilets, but a two minute drive to the main campground has a very nice shower house and flushing toilets (available to all campers at Lake Louise). Campground hosts were very nice and answered any questions we had. As is with any campground in the Midwest near water: bring bug spray.
