Overview

Lake Lowndes State Park serves as a premier destination for travelers seeking a mix of outdoor adventure and recreational sports in eastern Mississippi. Centered around a scenic 150-acre lake, the park provides a lush, wooded backdrop for a variety of activities. Whether you are looking for a quiet place to park your rig for a week or a basecamp for exploring the historic town of Columbus, this park offers a well-rounded experience that highlights the natural beauty and hospitality of the region.

Location & Surroundings

Located just a short drive southeast of Columbus, MS, the park is nestled within a dense forest of pines and hardwoods near the Alabama border. The environment is serene, characterized by the gentle topography of the Mississippi hills and the quiet rustle of the surrounding wilderness. Its location near the Tombigbee Waterway makes it part of a larger network of natural attractions, offering a sense of seclusion while remaining close enough to city conveniences for supplies and local dining.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is exceptionally well-equipped for modern RVers, featuring 50 camping sites that offer full hookups for water and sewer. For those who enjoy staying active, the facility is unique for its multi-purpose gymnasium, which includes indoor courts for basketball and volleyball. Outdoor enthusiasts can take advantage of the six tennis courts, a premier disc golf course, and a well-maintained boat ramp providing access to the lake for freshwater fishing and afternoon paddling sessions.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can explore the rich history of Downtown Columbus, known as the Friendly City. Local highlights include the Tennessee Williams Home and Welcome Center and the scenic Columbus Riverwalk, which offers miles of paved paths. The park is also a convenient stay for those visiting the Columbus Air Force Base or attending events at the Mississippi University for Women, providing a peaceful, nature-focused alternative to traditional lodging.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is an excellent fit for active families and sports lovers who appreciate having access to high-quality athletic facilities while camping in the woods. It is equally suited for anglers and birdwatchers who will find the 150-acre lake and the Opossum Trail to be perfect spots for quiet observation. Fantastic campground with all the amenities! Super clean and well maintained and right on a beautiful clean lake! Each site has a large paved pad, a gravel side with a level gravel tent pad, a fire ring, charcoal grill and picnic table. The bathroom was clean and a laundry room is available. They give a 20% senior discount. I highly recommend this campground!

The park itself is very nice but the bathrooms are sure showing their age, that said they did have new shower curtains and the toilets and sink area is clean.

I recently visited this location for our family reunion, and it proved to be an ideal venue, as it offers something for all age groups. The facility includes a basketball court, a dance area, a reception space, and restrooms. The building was clean, particularly the reception area and the bathrooms. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the bathroom was stocked with both paper towels and toilet tissue, as many places often have only one or the other, or sometimes neither. Lake Lowndes was easy to find, as it was marked on the map, and I arrived without any trouble. The outdoor grounds were exceptionally well-landscaped and well-maintained, featuring trees and benches for those who enjoy sitting outside and taking in the natural surroundings. Overall, Lake Lowndes is the perfect spot for family reunions.

The park itself is beautiful and very peaceful, however if you are camping with children or are more adventurous, this is not the place for you. The camp area is full of RVers that stay inside. The playground is small. The website mentions swimming but signs are posted around the lake stating NO swimming. Again, beautiful park but it was super underwhelming for my outdoor loving family.
