Lake Mackenzie Park

Overview

Lake Mackenzie Park offers a surprising oasis amidst the high plains of the Texas Panhandle. Situated within the dramatic Tule Canyon, the park centers around a reservoir that provides a stark contrast to the surrounding agricultural landscape. It is widely recognized as a destination for those seeking rugged outdoor recreation rather than a manicured resort experience. Visitors often come here to enjoy the scenic red rock vistas and a sense of isolation that is hard to find in more developed areas.

Location & Surroundings

You will find this park located roughly midway between Silverton and Tulia, Texas. The geography is defined by deep canyons and striking red cliffs that transition into the Rolling Plains. The descent into the canyon provides travelers with a unique perspective on Texas geology. Because of its remote location, the night skies are exceptionally dark, making it a prime spot for stargazing away from city light pollution.

Amenities & Park Features

The park provides diverse camping options including sites with full hookups and areas for primitive camping. Onsite facilities are designed to support outdoor enthusiasts with features such as:

  • Access to a boat ramp for lake recreation.
  • Miles of dedicated OHV and ATV trails for off-roading.
  • Restrooms, showers, and a bait shop for convenience.

Many sites offer picnic tables and fire rings, allowing for a traditional campfire experience under the canyon walls.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is a primary pastime here, with the lake frequently stocked with largemouth bass and catfish. For those who prefer land-based activities, the extensive trail system accommodates hikers and mountain bikers looking for a challenge. If you are willing to drive a short distance, Caprock Canyons State Park is nearby, offering additional hiking opportunities and the chance to see the official Texas State Bison Herd in a similar geological setting.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for OHV riders and anglers who prioritize access to trails and water over luxury resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for RVers who enjoy a rustic, quiet atmosphere and the ability to explore rugged terrain right from their doorstep. Families looking for a budget-friendly outdoor getaway will appreciate the open spaces and the variety of recreational activities available within the canyon.

What a beautiful lake. Took 2 friends camping for their 1st time. Water level low for boating but was great for kayaks. Had rv spot 1ab, across cliff from eagle point. Amazing views. Great campsites, plenty of room.got to take them for 1st experience offroading. Took a day trip to check out Caprock Canyon State Park. No cell service, texts come and go sometimes.

Wish there was more water but by far a Great Lake to relax at. I’ve got some good side channel cats out of there… I prefer lake McKenzie over most lakes.

If you like to camp, fish, kayak and go on AWESOME ATV trails this is a great place to visit. You will need to come prepared because this place is in the middle of no where!!! They have 2 cabins that they rent, RV sites and camping sites. There are plenty of picnic tables. It looks like the campground and picnic tables have been recently renovated. The Marina sells Minnows and some food items. My last visit I took my ATV. Next time I will take my Kayak and ATV. I stayed in the cabin by the Marina. It was comfortable, 3 queen beds all in their own rooms, each room had their own AC. Full kitchen, some dishes but I took my own. No TV!! And bad cell service in the area. A great place to enjoy life. Don’t forget to book in advance especially in the summer.
