Lake Malone
Overview
Lake Malone State Park offers a serene escape centered around a stunning 788-acre lake. Located in the heart of Kentucky, this destination is defined by its scenic sandstone cliffs and lush greenery. Unlike many flat-water destinations, the rugged terrain here provides a dramatic backdrop for travelers seeking a deep connection with nature. It is a place where the pace of life slows down significantly, allowing visitors to appreciate the quiet forest atmosphere while enjoying modern camping conveniences.
Location & Surroundings
Tucked away in Dunmor, KY, the park is situated among massive hardwood forests and high rock walls. The surrounding landscape feels secluded and wild, offering a true getaway vibe for those traveling through Muhlenberg County. The park's elevation changes and shaded sites provide a cooler, sheltered environment during the humid summer months. This unique geography makes it one of the most visually striking state parks in the region, perfect for those who appreciate diverse natural landscapes and dramatic geology.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground provides 26 sites equipped with water and electric hookups, accommodating a variety of RV sizes. Guests have access to a central dump station, clean bathhouses with showers, and a playground for children. For those who enjoy the water, the park features:
- A large sand swimming beach with a nearby bathhouse.
- A boat ramp and dock for easy lake access.
- Well-maintained shady campsites that offer privacy from neighbors.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the multiple scenic hiking trails, such as the Laurel Trail, which showcases mountain laurel, holly, and impressive rock overhangs. One of the most unique features of the park is the collection of Big Twigs, which are oversized wooden sculptures that add a touch of whimsy to the forest. Anglers frequently visit to catch trophy-sized bass, crappie, and bluegill. Additionally, the park serves as a gateway to exploring the small-town charm and historical markers found throughout Logan and Muhlenberg counties.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal fit for nature photographers and birdwatchers who want to capture the rugged beauty of Kentucky's cliffside habitats. It is also perfect for families seeking a quiet, rustic experience away from the noise and neon of larger commercial resorts. If you prioritize hiking, fishing, and a peaceful forest setting over high-speed internet and luxury amenities, Lake Malone State Park will provide the tranquil environment you are looking for during your RV journey.

Camped there Labor Day Weekend 2025. We had a blast, the park is always clean and the staff are super friendly and helpful. Love having this place so close to home.

We spent a beautiful day walking around Lake Malone. I rated it three stars because the public swimming area and mini beach were disappointing. There was a strong smell of marijuana, and people were actually smoking it there despite the presence of many children. I found that completely disrespectful, and it made me feel uneasy, so we decided to leave. If I was leaving a review for the public beach/swim area I would have gave it one star for easy access.

Lake Malone State Park is a wonderful scenic adventure full of whimsy and delight around every corner. Frankie loved meeting all of his new friends. Too bad they didn't have any people sized marshmallows. There is a note: if you do decide to do the walking trail between the statues I would suggest you go with a buddy for safety. There's some parts of it that they have chalked out and it's a little bit treacherous. However there's a lovely playground and giant fields to play in and the Forest trail is gorgeous even though the longer stint of it is a little bit rough.

I often get on Google Maps and find places to take my 6 yr old. We love to be outside exploring! Hiking, waterfalls, lakes and park are what we love! We really enjoyed lake Malone the hiking trails were very nice, the walk down to the water wasn't to far (from the parking lot if a far walk isn't for you) my sons favorite was finding the Twigs around the park!
