Lake Manatee

Overview

Lake Manatee State Park offers a serene escape for RV travelers seeking the natural beauty of Florida’s interior. Located along the south shore of a 2,400-acre reservoir, this park is defined by its quiet atmosphere and lush landscapes. Unlike the bustling coastal resorts nearby, this destination provides a tranquil lakeside experience where the sound of the wind through the pines takes center stage. It is an excellent choice for those looking to reconnect with nature in a peaceful freshwater setting.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just east of Bradenton on State Road 64, the park is easily accessible while remaining remarkably secluded. The environment transitions from sand pine scrub to hardwood forests, creating a diverse habitat for local wildlife. The surrounding area remains largely undeveloped, preserving the freshwater reservoir as a pristine centerpiece for the park. Its location provides a perfect balance between remote wilderness and convenient proximity to the amenities of the greater Sarasota-Bradenton area.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features 60 spacious sites, each equipped with water and 30-amp electrical hookups. While there are no sewer connections at the individual sites, a centrally located dump station is available for guest use. The park provides well-maintained bathhouses with hot showers and a designated swimming area on the lake. Boaters will appreciate the onsite ramp, though the 20-horsepower engine limit ensures the water remains peaceful for kayakers and paddleboarders.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Anglers visit from all over to fish for bass, bream, and catfish from the accessible fishing pier. Hikers can explore several miles of trails that wind through the flatwoods and marshes, offering glimpses of gopher tortoises and various bird species. Beyond the park gates, the vibrant culture of Bradenton and the famous Anna Maria Island beaches are within a short drive. This allows travelers to enjoy the Gulf of Mexico's white sands during the day and return to the quiet woods at night.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers who prefer a rustic, quiet environment over a high-activity resort. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a safe, natural playground and for anglers who enjoy freshwater fishing. Because of its layout and site sizes, it is particularly well-suited for mid-sized RVs and travel trailers looking for a peaceful home base while exploring the unique ecosystems of the Florida Suncoast.

Extending only about three miles along the south shore of Lake Manatee, this state park is definitely considered to be smaller yet it has plenty to offer! Typically we always see someone fishing from their boat or the park's fishing docs. There is a swimming beach, but beware of gators in the area and always swim at your own risk! In addition, this park has a large picnic area and pavilion as well as a volleyball net in the sand. Full-facility camping is also available, which we haven't tried as we are only day trip visitors. Overall, this state park is well kept and it's a different experience every time we go.

Love love the peace I found here! The restrooms were absolutely CLEAN! I was on campsite #19 and the hostess for the area were so KIND and ensured I was good after that surprise rain storm we had. Love walking along the lake and hearing the rain come down as I laid in my tent!

Great location. A Walmart is 20 minutes away, and there's a 7-Eleven at 8 minutes. Visitors are very respectful of quiet times, even the ones with dogs or many children. Park rangers and camp hosts were kind. I missed a bit of tree canopy for the campsite (since I forgot my canopy tent), but I get it; the place seems to be fit more for RVs. Nonetheless, if you have the canopy, it's going to be fine.

March 2025. First time camping here (3 nights) - everyone who works here was so friendly! Inside the ranger station, where you check in, is the book, puzzle, etc. exchange - plus friendly people! Our bug zapper (allowed at this park) was very "zappy" at night! Great experience - hiking, biking, canoeing.

Lake Manatee State Park is a hidden gem! The park is on the smaller side, which actually makes it feel more peaceful and easy to explore. Everything was super clean and well-maintained. We really enjoyed the beach-style swimming area—it was perfect for a relaxing day by the water. There are plenty of picnic spots and the trails were clearly marked and nicely cleared. We’ll definitely be going back!
