Lake McSwain
Overview
Lake McSwain Recreation Area offers a peaceful retreat nestled in the oak-studded foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Located just outside Snelling, CA, this park serves as a tranquil alternative to busier California reservoirs. Managed by the Merced Irrigation District, the park provides a well-maintained environment where the focus is on nature and relaxation. Whether you are arriving for a weekend of fishing or a longer stay, the park offers a welcoming atmosphere that balances rustic charm with the essential modern conveniences required for a comfortable RV experience.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the scenic Merced River canyon, the park is surrounded by golden hills and diverse local wildlife. The drive through Snelling provides a sense of stepping back into a slower pace of life. The lake itself is a smaller, more intimate body of water compared to the sprawling Lake McClure located just upstream. This specific geography provides a unique foothill microclimate that is often more temperate than the central valley floor, making it a popular escape for those looking to enjoy the outdoors year-round.
Amenities & Park Features
The RV facilities include sites equipped with water and electrical hookups, accommodating various rig sizes and types. Guests have access to clean restrooms, hot showers, and a convenient dump station for self-contained units. For those traveling with families, the seasonal Splash n Dash Water Park provides a unique floating playground. The park also features a well-stocked marina, a general store for last-minute camping supplies, and a designated fish cleaning station to help you prepare the day's catch before returning to your site.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Fishing is the primary draw here, as Lake McSwain is a premier trout fishing destination regularly stocked to ensure a high-quality experience. Boaters can enjoy the calm waters, though a strict no-wake zone ensures the environment remains quiet and safe for paddlers. Hikers will find several trails winding through the hills, offering expansive views of the surrounding valley. For those planning a longer trip, the park is a viable basecamp for Yosemite National Park, allowing travelers to explore the iconic valley during the day and retreat to a quieter campsite at night.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for avid anglers seeking a focused fishing environment without the heavy motorboat traffic of larger lakes. It is also a fantastic choice for families looking for a safe, contained recreation area where children can enjoy the water and playground facilities. If you prefer a slower pace of travel and value a sense of community among fellow campers, Lake McSwain fits your style. It is best suited for those who appreciate natural beauty and quiet evenings under the stars over high-energy resort amenities.

Zero Cool
It’s a decent lake with very few options for day use areas. If you have a boat it’s great but It only has one small area to swim at that’s surrounded by fisherman all day. If the splash zone is closed there are little no options to do anything there.

Very cool are for adults or kids. RV sights were pretty cool and come with a gazebo but they are dry as expected. However the fishing near by is great. Also the water park there is pretty amazing for kids or an adult.

The cover all amenities you need. And it was much nicer than expected.. lounge area's are nicely shaded good food.. the water is tough at first to get into cause it's freezing lol.. but in a hot summer day you'll appreciate it.. overall I'll be back again.

Not bad camp area, but bring your own BBQ, only two sites had BBQ all had fire pits but couldn't have a campfire while we were there, restricted... Fishing left alot to be desired. Caught one lonely carp.... Other campers were friendly. Store near boat launch is closed most of the time, only open on weekends.....
