Lake Murray

Overview

Lake Murray State Park stands as Oklahoma’s first and largest state park, offering a sprawling retreat centered around the crystal-clear waters of a 5,700-acre lake. This destination is well-regarded for its diverse camping options and scenic vistas. Whether you are looking for a lakeside spot or a secluded wooded site, the park provides a classic outdoor experience that has welcomed generations of travelers. It is a place where the natural beauty of the Arbuckle Mountains meets a wide array of recreational opportunities, making it a premier destination for regional explorers.

Location & Surroundings

Located just south of Ardmore, Oklahoma, the park is easily accessible from Interstate 35, making it a convenient stop for those traveling through the central United States. The terrain is characterized by rolling hills and dense woodlands that frame the spring-fed lake. Because the lake is entirely contained within the park boundaries, visitors enjoy a sense of privacy and preservation. The surrounding landscape serves as a lush backdrop for peaceful mornings at your campsite or afternoon explorations of the unspoiled shoreline.

Amenities & Park Features

RV travelers will find several distinct campgrounds tailored to different needs, including popular areas like Elephant Rock and Cedar Cove. The park provides a variety of setups to accommodate different rigs:

  • Full-hookup sites available in select campground loops.
  • Convenient modern comfort stations with private showers.
  • Multiple dump stations and paved boat ramps for easy lake access.

For those who enjoy active recreation, the park features a championship golf course, tennis courts, and miles of multi-use trails that accommodate hikers and mountain bikers alike.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

A visit to the iconic Tucker Tower is essential, providing an educational nature center and a panoramic view of the lake from its lookout. Water activities dominate the experience, with designated swimming beaches and excellent fishing for bass and crappie. Off the water, the Lake Murray ATV Park offers specialized trails for off-road enthusiasts. Nearby Ardmore provides additional dining and shopping options, but most visitors prefer staying within the park to enjoy the serene environment and the many recreational docks.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for families and outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate a balance of structured activity and natural relaxation. It caters well to big-rig owners looking for spacious sites as well as those seeking a more rustic, nature-focused stay. Because of its size and variety, it is a perfect match for multi-day vacationers who want everything from golf to water sports in one location. If you value clear water and well-maintained public lands, this Oklahoma gem fits your travel style.

Good camping area, Water Access, Nice riding trails… all different terrains. Some mid holes, sand, some rocks, hills. Something for everyone! It’s fun for the whole family!! There are spots that are fun, like a tree with cans people have put on it, a flip flop covered tree. There’s a spot in the lower area where they decorate. It’s fun! The prices are typical compared to others, laid back, staff have seemed friendly. I wish we could ride after dark, otherwise it’s a good one!

Camped at Buzzard Roost site 38 which was right on the water. Every camp site was taken and you are extremely close to your neighbors which is why I gave it 4 not 5 stars. Bathrooms were clean and accessible as well as water and a hot shower. Spent 2 nights with my young son and it was a great outing. Lots to explore in the park that we didn't get to see but did make it to the nature center and tower! Caught 2 small fish off the pier close to the park office. All the attendants working were nice and helpful.

I recently visited Lake Murray State Park, and it was such a wonderful experience! Having been to many state parks, I truly believe each one has its own unique charm — and Lake Murray is no exception. The park is incredibly well-maintained — everything feels clean, organized, and top-notch. The lake water is crystal clear and beautifully blue, almost like the ocean! The Marina Beach gives off a real ocean-vibe with its soft sand and relaxing atmosphere. The air feels so fresh, and it’s the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy nature. The lodge and play areas are fantastic, ideal for both families and solo travelers. Don’t miss the Tucker Tower — the view from the top is breathtaking! The Nature Center is another highlight; it’s informative, beautifully designed, and offers an amazing panoramic view of the lake. A fun little spot I loved was near the Marina Beach Store, where people were feeding the fish — such a simple but joyful experience. The park is huge, with so much to explore — perfect for hiking, picnics, boating, or just spending a peaceful day by the water. Overall, it’s a must-visit for anyone who enjoys nature, scenic beauty, and a clean, well-kept environment.

Beautiful! Lots to do and see! Tucker Tower, the Marina, the Beach, RVing, boating! 👍👍 The water is SOooo clear! We didn't fish, but there seemed to be quite a few swimming around every spot we stopped at. Cute store with fishing gear, ice cream and t-shirts, + hats. Remember, pak out your trash, leave it like you found it, and bring water! $10/out of state parking Fee - pay online or at Ranger station down the road. (I think it's $8/in-state licenses)

Went camping at Tipps point this weekend and absolutely loved it. We were nervous at first because of the group camping area was packed. We looked for our spot and were impressed with how far away we were from everyone else. Our view was absolutely incredible and very peaceful. Only thing we didn’t care for was there were only a few restroom/showers 30 people were stacked waiting every time we went. Put another set by the group campsites and problem solved. Would 100% be going back to this place.
