Lake O' The Pines - COE/Johnson Creek
Overview
Johnson Creek is a premier Corps of Engineers (COE) facility situated on the lush shores of Lake O' the Pines in Northeast Texas. This park offers a tranquil setting characterized by a dense canopy of towering pines and hardwoods that provide ample shade for visitors. It serves as a peaceful retreat for those who appreciate the natural beauty of the Texas Piney Woods while still having access to modern camping conveniences. The park is widely recognized for its well-maintained grounds and its integration into the local shoreline ecosystem.
Location & Surroundings
Located a short drive from the historic town of Jefferson, the park sits along the northern shoreline of Lake O' the Pines. The surrounding area is dominated by the Big Cypress Bayou watershed, creating a landscape rich with biodiversity and scenic water views. The approach to the park leads travelers through rolling hills and thick forests, establishing a sense of seclusion. Its proximity to the waterfront means that most campsites offer views of the lake or are just a short walk from the recreational swimming areas and docks.
Amenities & Park Features
The facility features 55 campsites equipped with water and electric hookups, supporting both 30 and 50-amp service for various RV sizes. Guests have access to essential amenities including a dump station, heated showers, and flush toilets to ensure a comfortable stay. For those bringing watercraft, the park provides a multi-lane boat ramp and a dedicated fishing pier. Families often take advantage of the designated swimming beach, playground, and several covered picnic shelters that are ideal for group gatherings under the trees.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The lake itself is a major draw, famous for its trophy bass and crappie fishing, as well as kayaking along the quiet coves. Beyond the park gates, the town of Jefferson offers a unique cultural experience with its collection of antique shops, horse-drawn carriage tours, and historic steam train rides. For more nature exploration, travelers can head east to Caddo Lake State Park, where they can navigate through ancient cypress trees draped in Spanish moss in one of the most unique wetlands in the United States.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal destination for budget-conscious boaters and anglers looking for high-quality lake access at a reasonable price. It also perfectly suits families who enjoy traditional outdoor activities like swimming and bird watching in a quiet environment. Because the sites are spaced out and surrounded by nature, it is a top choice for RVer travelers who prefer the rustic charm of a government-managed park over the high-density layout of a commercial resort.

Beautiful lake site but listening to country music blasting at 2 AM and getting no sleep will have us leaving a day earlier than planned. We camp at State Parks and COE’s all the time but this is a first.

Beautiful lake andthe fishing is good . We stayed at site 306. Lake side Full concrete pad. 50/30/20 amp electric with water. Site was fairly level with a fire pit/ grill, lantern post and table. Great views and partial shade. Electric was stable and water pressure was good. Good reception of off air TV channels and got four bars on Verizon cellular. The sites in this loop are somewhat small but can accommodate medium sized rvs. Thre is no bath house on this loop so it's a bit of a walk to the nearest one in the # 4 section. The bath house there are clean and well stocked and best of all it has central air conditioning 👌. Campsites hosts are frendly and welcoming. Be aware of the small Argentina ants. They are very invasive, so be prepared. This is a great lake for boating and fishing with plenty of boat ramps and places to just pull up to the shore. There are convience stores on the way in to the campground to get any supplies. The campground is quiet and the night skies are great for stargazing. All in all, we had a good experience here and plan to return soon.

The camp is clean and well kept, with many good access points to the lake. A private area is available for rental for a reasonable price, which includes 8-10 trailer pads with water and electric, private lake access, and a private pavilion with lights and restrooms and showers. This private area is a great deal for the price, but the facilities could use some refresh (not as nice as the rest of the park).

It has a great view of the lake. The beach was very nice and clean. The campsite was also clean and in great shape. Nice roads all around the park. The restrooms and showers are good. I recommend if you tent camp in the 200s use the RV just 100yd away. The shower is better and more private.
