Lake Pend Oreille - COE/Albeni Cove

Overview

Located on the tranquil shores of the Pend Oreille River, Albeni Cove is a hidden gem managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This campground offers a peaceful retreat for RVers who prioritize natural beauty and quiet evenings over the hustle of a commercial resort. The park provides a scenic backdrop for travelers exploring the northern tip of Idaho, characterized by its lush forest canopy and immediate access to the water. It serves as an intimate basecamp for those wanting to experience the rugged beauty of the Inland Northwest while enjoying well-maintained federal facilities.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just outside of Oldtown, ID, the park sits along the south bank of the river, providing a unique vantage point near the Albeni Falls Dam. The surrounding landscape is defined by the towering peaks of the Selkirk Mountains and the expansive waters of Lake Pend Oreille. Travelers will appreciate the proximity to the Idaho-Washington border, which allows for easy exploration of both states. The area is heavily wooded, offering significant natural shade and a sense of seclusion that makes the campground feel miles away from the nearest highway.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground offers a blend of rustic charm and essential modern conveniences. Guests can enjoy several well-spaced campsites designed to accommodate various RV lengths. The park features include:

  • 30-amp electrical hookups at selected sites.
  • A convenient on-site boat launch for river access.
  • A designated swimming beach and day-use picnic area.

Other functional amenities include vault toilets, drinking water stations, and a dump station. The presence of a playground makes it a family-friendly destination, while the thick forest cover provides privacy between most sites.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for many visitors is the Albeni Falls Dam Visitor Center, where you can learn about the region's hydroelectric history and local wildlife. Anglers often frequent the area for its excellent fishing opportunities, targeting trout and bass in the river’s steady currents. A short drive takes you to the vibrant town of Sandpoint, known for its local arts scene and dining. For those seeking mountain adventures, the nearby Priest Lake area offers extensive hiking trails and pristine alpine scenery that is well worth the day trip.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal fit for nature enthusiasts and boaters who prefer a quiet, slower pace of life. It is particularly well-suited for families looking for a safe, water-focused environment where children can swim and play. Because of its smaller size and peaceful atmosphere, it appeals to independent RVers who enjoy self-contained camping but appreciate the convenience of electricity. If you are looking to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in Idaho's scenic river valley, Albeni Cove is a perfect match for your travel style.

The location is beautiful but very busy as it is very close to a town. The hosts were mixed, the male was very kind and helpful, the woman, however, was extremely rude to me. It was approaching check out time and she approached me, as a single woman camping with my teenage children, as if I was incapable of properly packing and cleaning my camp. It was extremely demeaning and will give me pause when considering returning. My kids and I are very experienced in the outdoors and prefer more isolated locations with less people. But dang it was beautiful with fantastic swimming and easy paddling.

Absolutely one of my favorite places to camp! I have visited here since I was a child! Many wonderful memories throughout my life from Albany cove! Absolutely amazing views from, campsite "12 ".. my favorite! It is a hike in site, but worth the extra work! Phenomenal view and privacy! In all honesty you can't go wrong at any site. It's all beautiful! The campground is so well kept! Not too big, not too small, JUST RIGHT! Highly recommend EVERYONE to take a camping trip to Albany cove! You will not be disappointed! ❤️🔥🌲🪵🌻🌼⛰️🌅🌄🏞️🏖️☀️🌌🌕🦅🦉🐿️🐸🐢🐻🦝🧳🥾☮️🇪🇹

Really lovely campground, friendly hosts, nice showers (included with camp fee). There are outdoor showers for day use folks. River is really pretty- it looks like a lake. Perfect for paddle boarding

One of the best campgrounds I have ever been to! Definitely the best my wife and I have been to together! Our site had a nice peaceful stream rolling down the hillside and our site was isolated from the others. The camp hosts were also very kind and friendly! I hope we can come back and visit sometime and camp here again!
