Lake Roosevelt NRA/Hawk Creek
Overview
Hawk Creek Campground is a hidden gem within the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area. Located where the creek meets the vast reservoir, this site offers a quiet, primitive escape from the bustle of modern life. It is managed by the National Park Service, providing a secluded atmosphere surrounded by dramatic basalt cliffs and rolling hills. Travelers come here to disconnect and enjoy the stark beauty and serene waters of the Washington coulee country.
Location & Surroundings
Situated north of Creston, WA, the campground is tucked into a scenic canyon. The landscape is defined by rugged rock formations and the gentle flow of Hawk Creek as it winds toward the Columbia River reservoir. It is a short, pleasant walk from the campground to the Hawk Creek Falls, a stunning seasonal waterfall that cascades into the creek. The area transitions from open shrub-steppe to dramatic cliffside views, offering a unique high-desert experience.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a primitive camping experience, ideal for self-contained RVs. There are approximately 20 sites available, typically offered on a first-come, first-served basis. The facility features several basic amenities for visitors:
- No hookups or dump stations are provided on-site.
- Vault toilets and a seasonal hand pump for potable water are available.
- Individual sites include a fire ring and a picnic table.
The sites are generally level, making it perfect for those who enjoy dry camping in a pristine natural setting without the distractions of modern technology.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water activities are the primary draw for visitors. The Hawk Creek boat launch provides convenient access to Lake Roosevelt for kayakers, canoers, and small motorboats, though access depends on fluctuating water levels. Anglers often visit to fish for walleye, kokanee, or rainbow trout. For those staying on land, the trail to the waterfall is a must-see, and the surrounding area is excellent for wildlife viewing, where you might spot mule deer, golden eagles, or red-tailed hawks.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is perfect for boondocking enthusiasts and travelers who prioritize natural beauty over resort-style luxury. Because of the narrow access road and the lack of utilities, it is best suited for small to mid-sized RVs, truck campers, or van lifers. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat to recharge while listening to the sounds of the creek, this rustic canyon campsite will suit your adventurous travel style perfectly.

These campgrounds are really nice. Well laid out and very quiet. The lake is beautiful, and someone caught a 3 foot sturgeon.

Absolutely the most gorgeous lake I've ever seen. These shots are from the lookout point on the East side of the lake on Highway 2. Breathtaking!

This was the perfect venue for an event I attended. Great venue! No trash bins were provided for our get-together. I'm glad I brought trash bags. We did a recon to the venue prior to the event. We had to clean the area of bird & mouse poop. In addition, there was a trapped hummingbird above that would probably die because it could not get out. Clearly marked way to the pavilion and clean bathrooms. The bathroom is not close to the pavilion for those with disabilities. Beautiful area.

It was a super clean campground/boat launch. It was easy to find and great fishing. If you need a great fishing guide, book your trip with Good Ol'Boys Fishing Adventures! Captain Jesse Blevins and Uncle Steve know how to navigate the waters to get you on the fish. We will most certainly be back to do this again with them 🎣 🐟 🐠 🎣

Kettle River campground is an amazing place. Campground is very quiet, very clean and very scenic. Water level was very low so we had lots of area to walk and let our beagles run. Be prepared for afternoon winds!!!! While this is a small 12 site campground its worth the trip. Update: June 3rd 2023 Water level is really up, the dock is actually floating The two new pictures are from our campsite while sitting in our chairs Super cool
