Overview

Lake Snowden is a 675-acre educational and recreational facility located in the heart of Athens County. Managed by Hocking College, this destination offers a unique blend of natural beauty and academic integration. The centerpiece of the park is the 136-acre lake, which serves as a hub for water-based activities and peaceful reflection. Whether you are visiting for a weekend getaway or a longer stay, the park provides a well-maintained environment where nature takes center stage. It serves as a vital community resource while providing RV travelers with a spacious and scenic place to call home during their Ohio travels.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just outside the village of Albany, Ohio, Lake Snowden is surrounded by the gentle rolling hills and dense woodlands characteristic of the Appalachian foothills. The park is conveniently located near U.S. Route 50, providing easy access for larger rigs while maintaining a sense of seclusion. Its proximity to Athens makes it an ideal basecamp for exploring the vibrant culture of a college town while retreating to a quiet, natural landscape at the end of the day. The surrounding area is rich in biodiversity, offering travelers a chance to witness local wildlife and seasonal foliage.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features four distinct camping areas, including many sites equipped with electric hookups to accommodate various RV sizes. Guests can enjoy a wide range of outdoor amenities, such as a large swimming beach, multiple boat ramps, and a dedicated fish hatchery. For those who prefer land-based activities, the park offers extensive hiking and equestrian trails that wind through the wooded acreage. Children can spend time at the onsite playground, while families can utilize the picnic shelters for gatherings. The park commitment to conservation is evident in its well-preserved trails and clean, functional facilities.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Just a short drive away, visitors can explore Ohio University and the eclectic shops and restaurants of downtown Athens. Nature lovers will appreciate the nearby Zaleski State Forest, which offers additional hiking and historical sites like the Moonville Tunnel. For those interested in local history and craft, the region is home to several artisanal studios and farm-to-table markets. Lake Snowden itself is a premier destination for fishing and boating, with the lake being well-stocked with bass, bluegill, and catfish, making it a favorite spot for local anglers and peaceful paddlers alike.

Who This Park Is Best For

Lake Snowden is a perfect fit for outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize recreation over resort-style commercialism. Anglers and boaters will find the lake accessible ramps and quiet waters highly appealing. This place was probably great fun about 30 years ago. Run down and in great need of up keep. Tent camped and the fail to tell you there is only ONE functioning restroom on the property. The other restrooms listed on the map look pretty rough and are locked down. The replacements are portapots. We visited the rest area down the road a few times which had running water and flushable toilets. When the driveable public rest area is more desirable than the walkable shower houses on the property- there is definitely an issue. Unfortunately I would never return or recommend this site to anyone.

County resident here who just wanted to put her toes in the water for a couple of minutes today, and walk along the beach. The park demands a $3 parking fee. Bwahahahaha, as if!!!! I pay enough property taxes here I'm not paying like a damned tourist for a 10 minute walk along the lake. Good bye Lake Snowden. Never again. The practically dead Hocking College needs money BAD but they aren't getting any from me.

Gone to every pawpaw fest for the last 5 years or so, we have the best time. Beautiful setting, great campsites. The shower house could be better, often full of spiders and such, but not terrible for a campground, tho I've seen better. The lake is great, with a small beach and plenty of room to paddle around

Reserved campsite for 4 nights. Arrived to check in and office was closed. No staff available except 2 persons at the lake pay swimming area. Went there to ask how we could contact someone about our camp area. We had no table, no fire ring and no camper pad area. Water was across the street and we were advised we could not run water hose across the road to fill up tank. Someone was supposed to meet us at our site at 3pm, no one showed up. We had to find our own table and fire ring. Also the shower house is unsanitary, reeking of mold, no toilet paper. All bathrooms throughout the entire park has been shut down and ports jons set in front of or beside. Those have not been cleaned for some time and are in need of servicing. This campground could be an absolute wonderful place if it had the proper staff and updated facilities. There needs to be staff that knows what is going on. Office needs to be staffed and messages need to be returned if there isn’t anyone in office during office hours. Very disappointed in what has changed since our first stay just 3 short years ago! We will not be back!

We stayed 2 weeks, and for us, the campground is very quiet, not very crowded, but terribly mismanaged and way understaffed. The bathhouse (women's side) sometimes has toilet paper, never any hand soap and occasionally paper towels. The showers are disgusting! I'm not sure when the last time they were cleaned. The RV spots were large enough, but far from level.
