Lake Taghkanic
Overview
Lake Taghkanic State Park offers a quintessential Hudson Valley outdoor experience centered around its namesake 164-acre lake. Located in Ancram, New York, this park provides a serene escape from the bustle of city life. Visitors are drawn to its lush woodlands and clear waters, which have been a favorite for generations of campers. The park balances a sense of history with the simple beauty of the New York landscape, offering a peaceful retreat into nature.
Location & Surroundings
Nestled in the heart of Columbia County, the park is characterized by the rolling hills and fertile valleys of the Hudson River region. Its proximity to the Taconic State Parkway makes it an accessible destination for those traveling from New York City or Albany. The surrounding area is dotted with charming orchards, local farm stands, and scenic vistas that define the rural character of upstate New York, providing a beautiful backdrop for your journey.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is designed for a traditional camping experience. While it caters to RVers, it is important to note that sites are largely dry camping with no hookups at the individual pads. However, the park provides essential facilities including centrally located bathhouses, a sanitary dump station, and water collection points. Recreational amenities are abundant, featuring two swimming beaches, multiple boat launches, and several miles of hiking and biking trails that encircle the lake.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the park boundaries, the region is rich with culture and history. A short drive leads to the city of Hudson, known for its world-class antique shops and vibrant culinary scene. History enthusiasts will appreciate a visit to the Olana State Historic Site, the Persian-inspired estate of artist Frederic Edwin Church. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the nearby Taconic Mountains offer additional hiking challenges and breathtaking overlooks of the valley.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for RVers who prefer a rustic, back-to-nature vibe rather than a luxury resort. It is a perfect fit for families looking to spend their days swimming and kayaking, as well as couples seeking a quiet weekend under the stars. Because of the limited hookups and site dimensions, it is best suited for smaller to mid-sized rigs and travelers who are fully prepared for a self-contained, immersive camping adventure.

Beautiful lake and well maintained trails! Looks to be a great camping destination too!

Always a good time here! A very nice beach, divided into separate swimming areas, enough lifeguards, volleyball, boat rentals, fishing! It's a really good deal for the $10 parking fee!

I would give 5 stars if the park was pet friendly. Overall very nice beach and beautiful grounds. Love that we can rent boats and go fishing! Looking forward to trying the camp grounds one of these days! Clean bathrooms, good snacks, not over crowded, a nice spot to spend a day.

What an unexpected surprise to be able to stay in a historical cabin fostering great memories for my little one from s’mores to lake swims, playground fun, trails etc. It rained most of the time we were there but they found ways to entertain from painting nails to helping cook etc but when the sun came out it was worth it! We even had a nightly bat show and a raccoon that apparently likes s'mores as much as my little one (ok not going to lie he scared me when he snatched the marshmallows we left on the table while we were still having a fire pit) but it was all nature and all amazing look forward to coming back to kayak next time since we don’t have enough time for our little weekend getaway. Thanks for a wonderful spot! :)

Great lake for everything outdoorsy. There is a sandy beach for swimming, camp grounds, walking trails, boating, playground, disc golf course, basketball area, snack pavilion and bathrooms with lots of stalls. 10.00 per car entry fee, and state troopers on site for security I guess. It's always a pleasant day.
