Lake Texoma - COE/Burns Run West
Overview
Burns Run West is a popular Army Corps of Engineers (COE) recreation area nestled on the eastern shores of Lake Texoma in Cartwright, Oklahoma. This park is widely recognized for its well-maintained grounds and its ability to provide a peaceful retreat for nature enthusiasts. Visitors often come here to escape the bustle of daily life, finding a balance between rugged outdoor adventure and the comfort of standard camping facilities. The park serves as a gateway to one of the largest reservoirs in the United States, offering a serene atmosphere dominated by water views and lush greenery.
Location & Surroundings
Located just north of the Texas-Oklahoma border near the Denison Dam, the park is situated in a prime spot for exploring the Red River region. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rolling hills and dense oak trees that provide ample shade for many of the campsites. Because it sits directly on the shoreline, the park offers stunning sunsets over the water. Its proximity to the town of Cartwright ensures that essentials are never too far away, while the immediate environment remains quiet and focused on the natural beauty of the lakefront.
Amenities & Park Features
The facility features over 100 campsites, many of which are equipped with 50-amp electric and water hookups to accommodate modern RVs. For the convenience of guests, the park includes a dump station, accessible flush toilets, and hot showers. Recreation is the primary focus here, highlighted by a designated swimming beach and a multi-lane boat ramp that makes launching watercraft seamless. Families will appreciate the on-site playground, while those seeking a picnic spot can find several shaded areas with tables and grills perfect for an afternoon cookout.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Fishing is the top draw at Lake Texoma, which is famously known as the Striper Capital of the World. Anglers can spend hours on the water or hire local guides for a more productive experience. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the history of the Denison Dam or head across the border into Texas to visit Eisenhower State Park. For those seeking indoor entertainment, the Choctaw Casino in nearby Durant provides dining and gaming options that offer a fun change of pace from the quiet of the campground.
Who This Park Is Best For
Burns Run West is an ideal destination for avid anglers and boaters who want immediate access to the water without the high price tag of a private marina. It is also a perfect fit for families who enjoy traditional camping activities like swimming and roasting marshmallows over a fire. It caters well to those seeking a relaxed, self-contained stay in a scenic environment.

This is a great campground. Good sandy swim beach and large spots in many areas. Make sure you have lots of hose since the water can be far (>50ft).

Love this Corp of Engineer Park, it is on Lake Texoma, Oklahoma side. Close to Denison, TX or Durant, OK--lots to see, restaurants & shopping. I would recommend camping area B--backup, at the water(water & electricity only); or C--all pull-thrus, I think they are full hookups. At the front before the gate, there is a playground; and picnic area. Group campung--and boat launch--past campsite C. Lovely sunset pictures! We stayed at site B9.

Perfect spot for camping by the lake! It's got lots of trees/shade, it's a short walk to the beach (wear shoes and watch out for glass), and it's not too crowded or busy. A very peaceful and relaxing atmosphere with clean bathrooms/showers. Definitely coming back for more!

Quiet and fun experience. Kids got to swim and we had electricity and water at our campsite. We bought wood at an authorized seller for our campfire since no outside firewood is allowed. Fishing, boating and swimming are some of the fun things to do here. Even in summer we had a nice breeze.

Beautiful, very clean and quiet- place. Even with campers at almost every spot, it was very peaceful. We are already looking forward to our next visit.
