Lake Waramaug
Overview
Lake Waramaug State Park offers a serene retreat on the northwest shore of one of Connecticut's most beautiful bodies of water. The park is characterized by its scenic vistas and a calm, clear lake that reflects the surrounding Litchfield Hills. While the campground is rustic, it provides a genuine escape for travelers looking to reconnect with nature in a well-maintained environment. The park name, meaning good fishing place, accurately reflects the abundant opportunities for anglers seeking a quiet lakeside experience.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in New Preston, CT, the park is nestled in the Litchfield Hills region, known for its rolling landscapes and colonial charm. The campground overlooks the lake, providing immediate access to the water's edge. The surrounding area features winding roads and lush forests, making the drive to the park as enjoyable as the stay itself. The lake is the second largest natural lake in the state, and visitors often appreciate the vibrant foliage during the autumn months.
Amenities & Park Features
As a state park facility, the amenities focus on the natural environment rather than luxury resort features. The park offers 77 campsites, including several that are RV-compatible, though it is important to note there are no hookups available. Essential features include:
- Clean restrooms and hot showers for guest comfort
- A convenient dumping station for RV travelers
- Boat rentals and a designated swimming area

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the park boundaries, the village of New Preston offers upscale shopping and local dining options. A short drive away, visitors can explore Kent Falls State Park, which features a stunning series of waterfalls and hiking trails. For those who enjoy local flavors, the Hopkins Vineyard is located just up the hill, offering tastings with a view of the water. The lake itself remains the primary draw, inviting guests to enjoy kayaking, canoeing, and fishing in crystal-clear waters.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for dry campers and small-rig owners who prefer a natural setting over a commercial RV resort. It is a perfect fit for families looking for a classic summer lakeside vacation or couples seeking a quiet weekend away. Because of the size constraints and lack of hookups, it is best suited for those who appreciate self-contained travel and prioritize scenic beauty and outdoor activities like hiking and paddling over high-speed internet or cable television.

Beautiful place to visit I visited Lake Waramaug State Park recently and had a fantastic experience. The lake is absolutely stunning—calm, clear, and surrounded by gorgeous rolling hills. It’s a perfect spot for kayaking or just relaxing by the water. The picnic areas were clean and well-maintained, and there was plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the view. We also explored a bit of the campground. The sites are spacious and nicely shaded, and it looked like a great place to spend the night. There’s a good mix of families, couples, and solo campers, and it felt very safe and welcoming. The park staff was friendly, and the bathrooms were in decent condition for a state park. I highly recommend visiting, especially in the fall when the foliage is at its peak. Can’t wait to come back!

Clean. Pristine. Quiet. Not crowded. The water is so refreshing and clean. And is not far from the tri state area. Especially coming from nyc. You can rent some boats or take your own inflatable out in to the lake or just take a dip in the water. Highly recommend visiting here it is a breath of fresh air. Come prepared to stay long cause you will feel so at peace.

May be my favorite place to camp... certainly in CT if you wake up with the sun the sunrise over the lake is fabulous. It's clean and well maintained. Lots.of day trippers... Nice safe bike road around the lake. Campsites have almost all grass which is wonderful vs gravel or dirt (comfy and clean) but still plenty of shade. Generally very well placed campsites. And a few cabins. No dogs not obvious alcohol (beer in a cup seems fine)

Wonderful little park right next to the lake. We didn’t have much time to explore as it was cold and we were just scooping it out for nicer days but we were very pleased with what we found. We will definitely be returning to spend the day and camp! Also there are a bunch of picnic tables by the lake for a fun afternoon!!!

A beautiful park right on the lake. We saw geese, ducks and herons. Herons. Unfortunately, the weekend we were there at poured buckets so we would like to return. Nice sites on the grass with most having a view of the lake. Bathroom was fine with free showers.
